- Meet Melissa
Tobias’s gruff voice traipsed through her mind. Your brothers and their wolf pack don’t scare me. “No, he’s not. It shouldn’t be a big deal. He never planned on staying in town anyway, and we were just messing around.”
“Then why are you avoiding your brothers like the plague?”
“Because of what they did and how they did it, and now I’m left with so many unanswered questions that I’ll never know the answers to, thanks to them.”
“But if not for them, you may never have known anything.”
Madigan sighed, knowing she was right.
“Blaine’s going insane, Mads, and I swear Zeke is planning an intervention.”
“I know. I’ve listened to their voicemails.” She’d briefly spoken to Maverick when he’d shown up at LOCAL before her shift Monday to apologize and to Zander when he’d brought a pizza as a peace offering later that night, but she hadn’t given either of them more than three minutes. She couldn’t. She’d had to escape before getting too upset.
“How long are you going to punish them?”
“I don’t know. Maybe I’ll send them Christmas cards.”
“Mads…”
“I want to forgive them, especially after what Blaine said about Ashley.” Her throat thickened. “But I get too upset when I think about how everything went down.” She stopped at a red light. “Maybe I’m just so mad at myself, I’m turning it on them. I don’t know. I hate feeling like this.”
“You must’ve really liked Tobias to be this conflicted.”
“It’s stupid. He’s shown me where I stand. Obviously the connection I thought we had was all in my head.” The light changed, and she turned the corner. “Can we not talk about him? I promised myself I’d stop thinking about him.”
“Okay, then I’ll tell you about the date I have this weekend.”
Glad for the change of subject, she jumped on it. “You have a date?”
“Yes, and if you’d stop hiding out, you could have been with me in P-town last night when I ran into Dante.”
“You’re going out with Dante?” Madigan was surprised. “I knew you thought he was hot, but I didn’t know you were into him like that.”
“Neither did I. But we hit it off last night. See what you miss when you don’t hang out with me?”
“I wouldn’t have been good company, but I’m happy for you. Be sure to ask him a zillion questions before falling into his bed, and be specific, like, Have you killed anyone?” Madigan knew Dante well, but she was beginning to wonder if she ever really knew anyone at all.
“I already did. He’s never been in prison, never married, no STDs, and no little ones running around, as far as he knows.”
“Damn, you’re good, Mar.”
