“I don’t know... Reed and Veronica are taking care of it.”
“You sound alarmingly unconfident.”
I bring the wine to my lips, letting it rest there for a moment, as if I’m drinking.
“It’s not a big deal—it’ll play on the lot while guests arrive tomorrow to keep them occupied during our first look. I’m just nervous about what kind of pictures he’ll include because he thinks they’re funny. He has some less-than-flattering ones of Graham in his arsenal. But he and Veronica won’t let anyone see it. They’re refusing. Want it to be some big surprise. Even Cheryl’s in the dark, which never happens.”
Lena looks at Jess, who offers a nod, then at me. “She can hack into it.”
“What?”
“She does computer shit.” Lena looks at her partner, who’s standing there like she’s embarrassed to accept these humble brags. “Right?”
Jess glances around the room as she scratches her neck. A nervous tick?
“I guess. If I’m on his device, I can try. What do you want me to do, though?”
“Just scan for inappropriate pictures and delete any bad ones,” Lena answers for me, nodding proudly. “Do you know his password?” she asks me.
“One hundred bucks says Veronica’s birthday or the name of his favorite porn star,” I respond, getting a laugh out of both of them. “It’s in his room. The computer.”
Jess offers an understanding smile. “You know what,” she says to Lena, “I’m not feeling great. I think maybe I’ll sit inside for a moment, get my bearings.” She starts backing away.
“Problem solved,” Lena says, as we watch her exit the tent. “Now, drink up, baby.”
When it’s time to eat, Graham and I take our seats behind little wooden letters labeling us Mr. and Mrs. that Molly had carved from the stash of firewood in the garage. Really going the extra mile, this one.
Cheryl and Doug are the closest to us, sipping martinis and snacking on bruschetta until the food arrives. Beside them are a few cousins—Marty and Margarita, unfortunately married and kitschy about it; Elliot and his wife, Lauren, who are sharing the title of officiant only because Graham wanted Elliot but I didn’t trust him to not write a speech entirely about drinking at Yale together, so I got Lauren involved. Then Lena, in her black velvet suit with only a lacy dark purple bralette underneath, next to an empty place setting.
“She’s not feeling great,” she explains to Veronica on her other side.
“You know what,” Veronica begins, leaning too close to Lena, “Reed was throwing up all morning. I wonder if they ate something strange?”
Lena feigns consideration, looking past her new companion and toward Reed, definitely paler than usual. “Maybe. That’s a good point... I didn’t eat anything last night. Not in that dress.”
Veronica smiles approvingly.
