“Which is why the bill must pass, to ratify the progress we’ve already made. We’ll keep fifty percent of the workers to harvest. The rest will be useless mouths to feed. Once the Kongo undergoes population control, America will have the space we need to expand our research facilities into the south. The Assembly will have no choice but to utilize their top English talent, male or female, to ensure success.” She clasped her hands. “The future is here!”
I recalled the greedy gleam of Rowan’s tone as she’d professed a similar sentiment. “You and Rowan are on the same side,” I guessed.
“She doesn’t know it, as I’ve remained loyal to Dana in public. But yes, we are both in support of the New Seed.”
I thought of the twins and East Keep. “What will happen to the Keepers?”
“Your class will live.”
“And the new students transferred from the nursery?”
“Less to train, less to feed. Resources are scarce, girl.” She sniffed. “You’re not suggesting we keep them?”
I gripped my hand.
“Arika!”
“No,” I whispered. “They must die.” At that moment, Fount’s face materialized before me. I bit my lip as something inside me collapsed.
Jones paced. “You’ve made a mess of things, but there’s a chance to redeem yourself.” She turned on her heel. “The Vine boy has knowledge that we need. I’d bet on it. You’ll stay with him. Go wherever he goes. Get to the Director and learn what his plans are for the New Seed vote.”
“That’s impossible. Hosea hates me. He’ll never trust me again.”
“You’d better hope that’s not the case. If you’re of no use to me, you’ll be the first to perish.”
My chin sank to my chest.
“The vote takes place in three weeks, just after the Final Exam. When I have what I need, you may take the test and I’ll ensure you become a Senator.” She sat behind her desk and removed a clear jar from a drawer. It contained a silver hairpin.
“If you have to leave Cobane, so be it, but you must come back in three weeks. If you’re not back, I’ll have you arrested. If you’re caught before then, don’t let them take you alive. Do you understand?”
I nodded. I knew too much to be questioned by anyone not under her influence.
“If they come for you, jab the point of that pin into your flesh.” She pushed the vial toward me. “Be sure to break the skin. It will be over in seconds. Is that clear?”
I stared, barely breathing. There was only one thing to say. “Yes, Teacher. It’s clear.”
The Fallout
THE FALLOUT
Jetson found me in my room. “I’ve been looking for you,” he said. He stepped inside and closed the door. “Why are you packing?”
