This story was quilted from four million souls, those that survived American chattel slavery, and those that didn’t. Those that recorded their recollections, and those that died unsung, in graves without stones.
Their individual contributions found me in unusual ways as I wrote. A line of research, a gospel song or a look from a stranger would bring on inexplicable tears. And, filled with joy or pain, I would stop and listen for guidance. These moments were the old souls reaching out across space and time. They inspired The Record Keeper, shaped the plot and are entirely responsible for its success.
A particular debt is owned to Mr Frederick Douglass and Mr Fountain Hughes. Mr Douglass, your life and writings form the basis of Arika’s narrative. Mr Hughes, your honesty and wit brought life to the Kongo Village. I’ll forever remember the first time I heard your voice.
Thank you and thank you again for entrusting us with your stories.
In addition, I’d like to acknowledge Paul Stevens. Paul, your advice and support throughout the publishing process proved dependable. Thank you for seeing value in The Record Keeper when others didn’t.

THE RIG
ROGER LEVY
Humanity has spread across the depths of space but is connected by AfterLife – a vote made by every member of humanity on the worth of a life. Bale, a disillusioned policeman on the planet Bleak, is brutally attacked, leading writer Raisa on to a story spanning centuries of corruption. On Gehenna, the last religious planet, a hyperintelligent boy, Alef, meets psychopath Pellon Hoq, and so begins a rivalry and friendship to last an epoch.
So many Lives, forever interlinked, and one structure at the center of it all: the rig.
“A triumph that is guaranteed to blow your mind.”
Lavie Tidhar, author of A Man Lies Dreaming
“Roger Levy is SF’s best kept secret, and The Rig is a tour de force: a darkly brilliant epic of life, death and huge drilling platforms. Read it and discover what you’ve been missing.”
