Hayley reads the clue. ‘Just you and me and the deep blue sea. Love Ty.’ Her eyes widen. ‘Oh, what do we think the date might be?’
Bonnie has to admire Hayley’s ease with this. She’s smooth and energetic. She could pass as a host.
‘Deep sea diving?’ someone calls out.
‘A boat trip?’
‘Secluded beach?’
And just like that, Bonnie is transformed back to a time when it was just her and Ollie. Years ago, the summer holidays after they finished school. They hadn’t known what universities they’d gotten into yet, so the future was a happy haze of opportunity.
They’d driven up the coast, stopping whenever they felt like it. Oliver would surf, she’d take photographs, they’d skinny dip and make little bonfires on the sand. One day they’d found a secluded beach and hadn’t even bothered setting up the tent, instead making a makeshift bed on the sand so they could watch the stars all night.
‘Could you live here forever, just the two of us?’ he asked her that night after they made love.
Bonnie remembers smiling at him. The notion that he could was obvious, but she still had a yearning in her heart. ‘What would we do for food?’ she asked, deciding to hide behind the practicalities of his suggestion.
‘Well, if food and money didn’t matter.’
Bonnie hadn’t been able to answer straight away. She loved Ollie, she wanted to be with him and only him. But, there was still a but. She still wanted so much more out of her life. She wanted to travel and study and build a photography business. So, the answer was no, but how was she supposed to say that?
‘Your silence says it all,’ he said.
‘Oh, Ollie, don’t take it like that.’
But he had. He’d spent the next day sulking too.
Maybe if she had told him she wanted him by her side for all the things she was dreaming for in life, things would have been different. Maybe they wouldn’t have broken up. Maybe he wouldn’t have thrown himself into another relationship only weeks after they’d ended things. Maybe he wouldn’t have married Amy after only one short year of knowing her. Maybe he and Bonnie would have run into Sophie Nix and gone home laughing at how much she’d flirted with Ollie. Maybe Bonnie would have felt smug, knowing that he was hers.
Maybe she never would have come on this show.
‘Bonnie?’
Suddenly she’s back in the lounge room of The One mansion and everyone is staring at her.
‘What do you think?’
‘You got the first one-on-one!’ a voice shrieks at her.
‘What?’ she murmurs.
There’s so much noise and commotion it hurts Bonnie’s ears.
‘How do you feel?’ Hayley asks.
‘She looks like she’s in shock.’
