Paige gives a small nod, her faith in their relationship still there. ‘When Andy got the job offer in Hong Kong it just felt like a chance to start fresh and make some new memories. Just being somewhere else will keep my mind busy. When I’m here doing the same thing day in, day out all I think about is falling pregnant. I’m obsessed with babies and wondering what kind of mum I’d be.’ Paige momentarily closes her eyes and with a deep breath she leaves that conversation behind. ‘You’ll have to come visit.’
Bonnie feels devastated at the prospect of losing her best friend but knows she can’t show how sad she is. Paige has enough going on without having to worry about upsetting her too. ‘Of course.’
Later, as she walks away from lunch and back towards her studio, she wonders how she’s going to survive living in this town without Paige. She knows the media attention she’s faced over the past few weeks will die down, but she’s never felt so alone. It’s hard to mourn a relationship with Oliver when she now realises he was never hers to begin with.
Bonnie reaches into her handbag in search of her shop keys as she walks past a good-looking stranger. But on second glance, he looks familiar, and he’s smiling at her … And just like that it clicks.
‘Ben, wow!’ She shakes her head. ‘I didn’t recognise you.’ She stares, taking in his face.
‘Thought it was time to shave that extra layer off.’
Bonnie finds herself a bit mesmerised, breathless even, which makes her want to laugh. ‘Well, it suits you.’
He grins and without the facial hair she notices he has a dimple in his cheek. It’s funny how she spoke to him every day for over two months but didn’t know that about him.
‘I like the new look,’ he says, gesturing to her haircut.
Her hand immediately reaches up to touch her hair, which she had cut off to her jawline. She’d had a typical ‘my relationship is over, I need a makeover’ moment. ‘Thanks, I thought it was time for something a bit different.’
‘Looks good.’
‘What are you doing here?’ She smiles as she finally yanks the keys free from her bag, forcing herself to break eye contact for a moment.
Ben pauses, then says, ‘Work. I had to come see someone about a story I might be covering.’
She’s surprised they’d get him to come up from Sydney for something like that but knows when the regular gigs dry up freelancers are pushed to travel more. ‘So, you’re all finished on The One?’ She feels a bit nervous bringing up the topic. She doesn’t know why, it’s not like she has anything to feel bad about. She didn’t do anything wrong.
‘Yeah, it wrapped up sooner than we thought.’
