  67. Book Club Discussion Questions

Bonnie thought Oliver would have messaged to warn her but the last text he’d sent was two nights ago, explaining in great detail what he’d like to do to her the next time they were alone. Her face reddens just at the thought of it.

‘Bonnie, hi!’ Sophie says, looking only slightly tentative about being there.

Bonnie stands as a sour taste fills her mouth. She hasn’t mentally prepared herself to come face to face with Sophie, especially when she doesn’t know what Oliver has told her.

Bonnie glances down at her outfit and grimaces for not making more of an effort. She’d had a family photoshoot earlier on the beach at sunrise. She’d thrown on tights and an oversized top and pulled her hair into a messy ponytail on the top of her head. She hadn’t even bothered with mascara.

‘Great space,’ Sophie coos as she looks around the studio, tossing her bouncy hair.

‘Thanks.’ Bonnie stands a little straighter, totally unsure how to move through this conversation.

‘I’ve been asking around and have heard nothing but good things about your work.’ Sophie leans a bit closer, a grin creeping onto her face as she confesses, ‘I’ve also been stalking your business page—checking out all your photos.’

This makes Bonnie feel more uncomfortable than it should, as though Sophie has been going through her underwear drawer. But maybe the discomfort comes from Bonnie’s own guilt that she’s planning on sleeping with Sophie’s fiancé the second he breaks off the engagement. Bonnie’s eyes drop to the floor, shame creeping through her body.

‘You’ve got a great eye,’ Sophie goes on, every inch of her face animated. ‘Every photograph I’ve seen is brilliant.’

‘Thank you.’

‘I want to book you to photograph our wedding.’

Bonnie feels like she’s been winded. This girl has got to be joking, doesn’t she? She feels her hands shaking just at the thought of having to look through her camera lens at Ollie dressed as a groom. But then another thought screams through her head: Why hasn’t Ollie broken up with her yet?

‘And Oliver’s okay with it?’

Sophie is blasé at this. ‘Trust me, he won’t mind. I asked him how he felt after we ran into you at the shops the other week and he said it wasn’t weird seeing you at all.’

Well, that feels like a slap in the face.
