  67. Book Club Discussion Questions

‘Well, she was right …’ Bonnie’s voice is soft. ‘Something did happen between us.’ She can’t quite meet his eye. Even though they didn’t sleep together, they did kiss and there was a promise for a future together. In some ways Bonnie believes it was more of a betrayal than a sex-ridden affair.

‘Yeah, but it’s not like I was going to admit that to her.’

Bonnie’s throat constricts at the reminder of his feelings for Sophie. It should be obvious—he is, after all, still with her—but somehow Bonnie had convinced herself that his feelings were stronger for her than they were for Sophie.

‘You want to turn out the lights?’ His eyes are suggestive, his mouth arched in a grin. The implication is clear that he wants the studio darkened so they can enfold themselves in pleasure.

‘You’re still with Sophie, aren’t you?’

But he dismisses the comment as he reaches for Bonnie, his hand settling on her waist.

He wants her. But he’s still with Sophie.

Is this the kind of guy she wants to be with? Usually his touch sends nothing but desire through her body, but she backs away. She doesn’t want this. She doesn’t want a relationship where the man she loves has to come see her after hours, through the back door, away from prying eyes. She doesn’t want secrecy about spending time with him, let alone having to hide her feelings for him.

‘This isn’t going to work.’ She shakes her head, finally letting herself realise it.

‘You want me to break up with Sophie?’ His expression is serious but not surprised.

But that isn’t what she wants. Instead she wants him to want to break up with Sophie. She wants him to want her more than anyone else.

When she doesn’t answer, Ollie offers, ‘I will, I promise I will, but it’s just not the right time.’

Bonnie’s head drops and her stomach sinks. He hasn’t offered her the reassurance she needs. Suddenly her mind clears, a fog lifts and she feels liberated at finally seeing the truth. ‘It’s never going to be the right time.’

He looks at her as though she’s dealt him a low blow. ‘Sophie’s still not over the miscarriage,’ he says a little defensively. ‘I can’t break up with her when she’s in such a bad way.’

‘Do you love her?’ Bonnie studies his face as she’s really not sure of what his answer will be.

His eyes narrow a little, a crease forming between his eyebrows. He seems annoyed that she’s asked him the question. ‘Don’t do this.’

Bonnie can’t quite figure out if he’s pleading with her to drop it or threatening her.

‘We can make this work,’ he urges.
