- Book Club Discussion Questions
Bonnie wishes she had given it some more thought before coming over here. Last night she’d kicked Ollie out of her place moments after he’d told her about calling the wedding off. ‘I can’t deal with this now,’ she’d told him, her mind swelling like a raging sea after everything with Ty.
Ty. Was all that only yesterday?
‘You’d think losing a baby would have brought us closer together, but he wants me to just move on, get over the fact I had our child growing inside me. A little us, growing right here.’ Her hand settles on her belly, a longing to feel her baby inside.
Bonnie’s never seen Sophie like this before. She’s always been perky and fake, but she sees none of that now. Harsh and raw emotions have peeled away her former self.
‘I know what you’re thinking.’ Sophie wraps her arms around her body, which Bonnie notices seems much smaller than when she last saw her. ‘That it’s not that big a deal. People lose actual babies and I was only ten weeks pregnant.’
‘That’s not what I’m thinking at all.’
Sophie’s chin trembles. ‘I feel like I’ve had the biggest loss in my life and people are just expecting me to get over it. No one understands.’
‘Where’s Ollie—Oliver?’ Bonnie quickly amends. Using his nickname feels too personal. ‘He should be here with you.’
‘He’s never here. He goes to work, goes out to the pub, plays footy and squash … bike rides. Anything to get away from me.’
Bonnie gets it. Oliver’s let his life go on, but Sophie is still embedded in her grief.
‘Give him a call, I’m sure he’ll answer if he sees it’s you calling.’
Bonnie doesn’t miss the snide tone. She goes to say she doesn’t have her mobile, she wouldn’t be here if she had her mobile, but decides against it. ‘Look, I don’t want to make things harder for you and Oliver.’
‘Are you saying you don’t have feelings for him?’
That isn’t what she’s saying, and Sophie knows it. ‘I’ve been away for a couple of months. I just expected I’d come back and Oliver would have moved on from what happened.’
‘So, something did happen between you two before you went away?’ There’s cockiness to her remark, some satisfaction that she’s right about a previous conversation.
Bonnie’s heart squeezes tight realising what she’s just done. She tries to swallow but the lump in her throat stubbornly lodges itself. Had Sophie suspected things earlier? Had she asked Oliver? Had he lied?
Sophie’s eyes burn into Bonnie, waiting for an answer. ‘Is that why you went on the show? To get away from him?’
