  67. Book Club Discussion Questions

His hands twist uncomfortably. She can still feel the heat that had radiated from them when he’d touched her. She had never felt lust like that before, she’d never wanted anyone like she’d wanted him. She has to gulp down on a lump forming in her throat.

She constantly needs to remind herself of Sophie. ‘Did you tell her anything?’

‘No,’ Oliver assures her quickly. ‘Nothing at all.’

Bonnie nods but she can’t deny her heart sinks a little. If Oliver wanted to be with her, he would have told Sophie and ended things straight away. He isn’t here to declare his love. He’s probably here to declare his regret.

He bites at his bottom lip before saying, ‘I’m just trying to figure out what to do.’

‘There’s nothing to figure out, Oliver. I won’t tell anyone. Sophie won’t find out.’ She immediately thinks about the photo Carla showed her the other day. She hopes it isn’t going to find its way to Sophie. She’ll have to talk to Carla about Faith McKinnon deleting it.

‘So, you don’t think I should tell Sophie?’

Bonnie isn’t exactly sure why he’s asking her. Does he genuinely want her opinion or is he fishing to see if she wants something more? ‘Do what you feel comfortable with,’ she manages, knowing she can’t feel guilt over being the other woman and then encourage him to lie about it too.

‘Right,’ he says slowly. ‘But you’d prefer no one found out?’

Her stomach churns at the thought of people around town hearing about it. She’s a businesswoman, a respected member of the community. How many wives would want to book a photoshoot with her if they thought she was a husband snatcher? ‘I can’t say I’m in a rush to have anyone know.’

He looks at her for a long time, causing Bonnie to look away. Just being in the same room as him makes her heart race too fast. She can feel herself getting hotter.

‘I wish …’ he begins.

There’s something about the way he’s looking at her that makes her whole stomach flip. She should tell him not to say any more, it’s too dangerous, but she can’t help herself. ‘You wish what?’

‘I wish there was a chance for us.’

A flicker of hope and then images of a life with Oliver come spiralling faster than she’d thought possible. Friday nights on the lounge with takeaway, barbecues and Pictionary with Paige and Andy, lazy Sunday mornings in bed … A dog, kids, a bigger house …

But the images come to a screeching halt because there’s Sophie. He’s engaged to someone else.

‘I can’t believe I let you get away all those years ago.’

Bonnie can barely breathe. Her chest throbs.

‘I’ve missed you, Bon. I’ve thought about nothing but you since last week.’
