- Book Club Discussion Questions
‘Wrong direction, guys,’ Darcy calls to the two of them. ‘Let’s go back to Ty’s comment about not liking the limelight, cooking or physical activity.’ They will clearly edit out the bit about Ty’s ex.
Bonnie feels suddenly nervous, especially when she sees Ty’s closed his eyes for a moment as though trying to push away old memories.
‘Ready when you are, Bonnie,’ Darcy calls, trying to get the conversation going again.
‘Yep, okay.’ Bonnie nods, forcing herself to focus on the prompt. Limelight, cooking, physical activity. ‘I hate being in the limelight and I’m a terrible cook, but some physical activity is okay …’ It takes a split second for her to realise that the phrase sounded far from how she’d intended. ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe I just said that!’ She clasps her hands over her mouth.
Ty laughs, seeming grateful for the distraction. ‘Hey, I’ve got no problem with that.’
But Bonnie looks to Darcy standing beside Ben and the camera. ‘Can you cut that out?’
Darcy and Ben are both laughing too. ‘No way,’ Darcy chimes. ‘They’ll definitely be using that in the promo for tomorrow night.’
Bonnie buries her head in her hands. ‘You do know my grandmother will be watching this.’
‘We’re still rolling,’ Darcy calls, indicating to keep the conversation moving.
Bonnie grimaces but knows there’s no point in being annoyed at Darcy and Ben when they’re just doing their jobs. It’s her own stupid fault for making embarrassing comments.
‘My grandmother would probably really like you,’ Ty adds to the conversation. He has a fond expression on his face.
‘Are you close to your family?’
He nods, shrugs. ‘My dad died when I was five. I don’t remember much about him. After that it was always me, my mum and my grandparents.’
They hadn’t really talked family before. ‘No siblings or cousins?’
Ty shakes his head, needing to clear his throat a little. ‘Both my parents were only children too.’
Bonnie doesn’t miss the sense of longing. She can’t imagine growing up as a single child when so much of her life has Carla weaved all the way through it.
‘I think that’s why I’ve always wanted kids—lots of them.’
‘Lots?’ That makes Bonnie tense. She’s always wanted two. Just two.
Ty looks at her and laughs. ‘Have I scared you off?’
‘Well, that depends on what qualifies as lots?’ She smiles, but there’s certainly some truth to her answer.
Ty shrugs. ‘Five or six.’
Her eyes bulge. ‘You’re crazy.’
But he just smiles. ‘Imagine how amazing it’d be to have that much love in your life.’
Bonnie’s done enough photoshoots with large families to turn her off the idea. ‘I think the word you’re looking for is chaos.’
