- Book Club Discussion Questions
Ty stares into her eyes, studying her. ‘I don’t know what it is about you, Bonnie Yates, but I like being around you.’
Her stomach contracts, urgent for breath. ‘I feel the same way.’
‘You did what?’ Ed’s face is a mix of annoyance and amusement as he learns of Zoe Eggins coming to their university reunion.
‘I had no choice,’ Darcy tells him, shifting her bag of fruit and veggies to her other hand as they move through the farmers’ market on Sunday morning. ‘She invited herself.’
‘She did,’ Drew agrees as he drains the last of his coffee. In only a few hours’ time he’ll be driving back to Gloucester. Their weekend together is almost over.
‘She hasn’t changed.’ Darcy’s rather satisfied that Zoe’s still exactly the person she was at university. It makes it easy to keep her feelings the same. Darcy likes the consistency of that.
‘Everyone’s going to be so pissed at you,’ Ed says. He shoves an arancini ball into his mouth. He makes it his mission to eat the entire time they are there.
He’s right. One of their favourite pastimes at such events is to bitch about how much they all hate Zoe.
‘It’s Drew’s fault.’ She turns to him accusingly. ‘You’re the one who mentioned it to her in the first place.’
But he’s not about to take the blame for it. ‘I was just trying to keep the conversation going.’
‘Well, maybe you need to learn to keep your mouth shut.’ Her tone is much harsher than she’d intended.
‘Whoa.’ Ed’s eyebrows jump high onto his forehead. He gives Darcy a look to suggest that maybe she should cool it.
Darcy knows it’s not really Drew’s fault, but she’d been looking forward to the reunion. She doesn’t want Zoe to come.
‘I need a drink,’ Ed says, now finished with his arancini balls. ‘And probably some macadamia nuts. Anyone else?’
‘I’m going to go grab some chilli jam to take home to Mum,’ Drew says.
‘Home?’ Darcy parrots. Isn’t his home in Sydney, with her?
Drew goes to say something, to adjust his words, or maybe to justify them, but just shakes his head and walks off towards the jam stand.
‘Are you trying to make things really awkward, or am I just imagining things?’ Ed asks as he leads the way towards a fresh lemonade stall.
Darcy lets out a groan. ‘I don’t know. I’m just frustrated.’
‘It’s not Drew’s fault that Zoe’s coming. And you know what she’s like—she probably won’t even come.’
