That was the best he could have hoped. He almost yelled huzzah. “Two weeks?”

“Yes.” She was still smiling. “In two weeks we will be married.”

Two weeks, then a honeymoon in Paris. Everything was going superbly. He had never in his life been happier. It was as if everything was finally the way it should be.

He gave Eleanor a glass of champagne and resisted kissing her shell-like ear. “White wine ices.”

“They sound delightful.”

“No.” Down the table, Lady Alice was giving his mother a stern look. For her part, Mama appeared shocked. “Eleanor would not like that at all.”

It seemed as if he was not the only one who would have to get used to her family. “I wonder what they are discussing.”

Eleanor swallowed a bite of asparagus. “I have no idea. Nor do I wish to know. I trust my sisters to do what I would wish.”

John cut a piece of a lobster patty with his fork. It made sense for the bride not to be involved in the wedding breakfast plans, and thus avoid any conflict with her future mother-in-law. “I believe we are well out of it.”

A sly smile graced her lips. “I agree. Now, shall we discuss our honeymoon, or is there another subject you would like better?”

That gave him an idea. “What will you be doing during the next weeks?”

She lifted one shoulder and dropped it. “Selecting new gowns and fittings. Why?”

He remembered how much she seemed to enjoy the idea of remodeling and decorating. “How long does it take to redecorate a house?”

Her eyes widened with interest. “That depends on how much there is to do. By house, do you mean everything?”

He held her gaze. “Every single room.”

“To decide on the colors and patterns, about a week, I would think.” The look in her eyes changed from interest to thoughtfulness. “Yes, that would do it. The decorationist who did both my family’s homes could make the changes while we are gone.”

John wanted to take her in his arms. “Will you need me to assist you?”

“Of course.” Her hand brushed against his. “You must be happy with the results.”

“Do you think we could begin tomorrow? After I speak with your brother?”

“I do not see why not.” She frowned slightly. “As long as your mother is at home. You should join us for breakfast.”

“Thank you. The sooner I am able to speak with Worthington, the sooner we can be off. I will see to it that either my mother or sister is present.” Thank the Lord he would not have to wait until their wedding to make love to her.
