- AUTHOR’S NOTES
Eleanor gave him a sympathetic look. “That set is taken. The only dance free is the opening set.”
For the first time the man seemed to notice John. “Good day, my lord.” Athersuch turned his attention back to her. “I would be honored to lead you out for the first set.”
John would be honored to plant the bounder a facer. He had not liked seeing her stand up with other men, but it was now becoming intolerable. “Why has no one asked you to dance at your come out ball?”
“I have no sets left.” She briefly placed her hand on his. “You always ask for the supper dance. Normally, I would be led out in the opening dance by one of my family, but no decisions had been made. Therefore, I gave it to you.”
A great welling of an emotion he couldn’t describe and had never felt before grew inside him. He’d had to stop the carriage because of traffic and took the opportunity to gaze into her magnificent blue eyes. He wanted to say something profound yet couldn’t think of a thing. “Thank you for saving the supper set for me, and your opening dance.”
“You are welcome.” Her chin came up, pointed to the side. “We have more company.”
John wanted to groan. Instead, he took out his quizzer and fixed it on Lord Folliot. The man almost turned away. Then he straightened his shoulders and approached. “My lord, my lady, good afternoon.”
John was on the verge of telling Folliot she had no sets left when Eleanor put her hand on John’s arm, staying him. “Good afternoon, my lord.”
Folliot cleared his throat. “My lady, do you have any sets left for Lady Fotherby’s ball?”
“I do not. Thank you for asking.”
“I shall be earlier next time.” He listed to the side as he bowed, and John tried to remember how old he was. Not past twenty. “Adieu.”
Eleanor gave John a look and covered her lips with her hand. “Oh dear. My brother was right. He really should have been sent to school.”
He was almost sorry he’d leveled his quizzing glass at Folliot. Almost. Right now, John had to work out how to go forward with Eleanor, and he needed advice, but who to ask? Yet this might be something he could do by himself. He just needed time to think. The problem was when he thought of her, she was almost always naked. Perhaps he should make a list.
