- AUTHOR’S NOTES
“Not you too!” Eleanor meant to use a sterner tone, but she barely held back a giggle. “Morning Mayhem indeed.” Yet she received no support at all. Everyone seemed to think it was an excellent description.
“You must admit”—Grace finally stopped laughing—“it does fit. Marquises picking egg from the table—”
“And dukes wiping eggs from faces,” Dotty added. “The ton would be in shock.”
And that was the least of it. Eleanor had to admit that they did have a point. And once she and her sisters wed, the table would only grow larger. “I’m for my bed as well. Morning comes earlier and earlier. Good night.”
“I’ll join you.” Alice rose and glanced at Madeline.
“Yes, I’m coming as well.” She said something to Harry, and he nodded. What was that about? “Good night.”
The three of them followed Con and Charlotte out of the drawing room to the hall. After the couple left, Eleanor and her sisters headed up the stairs to their bedchambers. Normally they would have gathered in the parlor to discuss the evening, but tonight they all seemed to need to keep their own counsel. Or, Eleanor thought, consider their next steps. Her body still tingled when she thought about Lord Montagu’s hands on her waist and the nearness of him. Her older sisters had mentioned something of the sort happening with their husbands. Ergo it must be a good sign. Eleanor was glad Con and Charlie had said what they had and she was pleased that Lord Montagu wanted to come to breakfast, even after he had been warned. It was a test of sorts. The only other thing she must discover is if he possessed more than merely moderate intelligence. And if he cared about doing something concerning the plight of the poor in Britain. The question was how to do that? If only they were attending a political event. She would ask Grace if it could be arranged. In the meantime, Matt was to discover if Uncle Herndon was in Town and if he was make an appointment with him so that she could discuss her plan.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN
John woke early the next morning. He’d already left word for Cook that he would not be home for breakfast. Even though the prospect of breaking his fast with children still in the schoolroom was a bit daunting, he was inordinately excited about it. He had wondered what it would be like ever since Eleanor mentioned it. Drat it all, he must remember to call her Lady Eleanor. If he kept this up, he was going to slip, and it would be at the worst possible moment. That was always the way those things worked. John hoped he would be given a chance to at least wash his hands after riding. Smelling like a horse in a dining room of any sort did not appeal to him.
