- AUTHOR’S NOTES
It was drizzling when Eleanor woke the next morning and padded to the window. The clouds were so dark, she was certain it would rain all day. That was just as well. There was much to accomplish. Before the Season began, Matt had reviewed the marriage contract with her and her sisters. He had made it very clear that any gentleman wishing to marry them had to agree to it. It had not occurred to her, until now, that John might not like the contract. Granted, all her brothers-in-law had signed the same agreement. Ergo, she probably did not have anything about which to be concerned. Still, what would she do if he refused? Part of her thought she would wed him despite his not agreeing, but Matt and Grace would not allow it. Fortunately, everyone would be at breakfast. Eleanor would just ask her sisters if they had had any difficulties.
She went to her desk and wrote four short notes to them and Dotty, requesting they arrive in enough time to meet with her about the settlement agreements in the Young Ladies’ Parlor. By the time she had finished, Jobert was in the dressing room.
Eleanor strode into the small room. “I have some letters that need to be sent immediately.”
Her maid held out her hand. “I shall give them to Turner. The yellow or cream today?”
“The yellow twill. I am going out after the meeting.”
Jobert nodded. “I’ll be back by the time you have washed.”
“Thank you.” Eleanor’s worries seemed to bury themselves under the excitement that was starting to grow. Today she would see her new home for the first time. From what John had said, it desperately needed to be refurbished. She had never taken on such a large task, but neither had Grace before she had remodeled Stanwood House and Worthington House. The prospect made Eleanor a little nervous, but if her sister could do it, so could she. After all, she had trained her whole life to be the mistress of large estates.
She went behind the screen and began her ablutions. True to her word, by the time Eleanor was finished, Jobert had returned and laid out her clothing. She had also brought a cup of tea and a piece of toast.
“It seems everyone is up before times this morning. Mrs. Thorton said it must be because of your betrothal.”
“She is probably right.” When they had returned home last evening, Matt made the announcement to Thorton and his wife, who told the rest of the staff. Naturally, Eleanor went immediately to her chambers to notify Jobert.
She held Eleanor’s gown up to be donned. “I am looking forward to meeting the staff at Montagu House.”
“I do hope you like them. Please tell me if there is any difficulty at all.” Eleanor wanted the transition to their new home to be easy for her servants and the old staff.
