- About Mark Dawson
Weaver winced a little. “I’m afraid that didn’t go quite as smoothly as we were hoping.”
She sighed and waved a hand for him to continue.
“He was staying near the hospital where his friend was being treated.” Weaver looked down at his notes. “The Hotel Central Caribe. He had dinner with the FBI agent who was leading the operation down there, and then he went back to the hotel. Six and Ten were given the green light to take him out, but they lost him.”
“What? What do you mean?”
Weaver shrugged apologetically. “They saw him go up to his room, and gave him an hour to get to sleep. When they entered the room, he wasn’t there. The bed was not slept in, and none of his belongings were there. The window was open. The best they can suggest is that he left through it and climbed down the fire escape.”
“He knew they were there?”
“I think we have to assume that, ma’am.”
She closed her eyes and waited for the flash of temper to pass. There was no profit in a hasty, emotional response. She knew the history of the Group. The man who had established it—Harry Mackintosh—had been prone to flashes of rage. He had enjoyed a long tenure in post, but she knew that his irascibility had contributed to the bad decisions that had ended with his death. She did not intend to make the same mistakes.
“I don’t understand why he was given an amnesty before. If we had taken care of things when we had the chance, none of this would have happened.”
“What would you like me to do, ma’am?”
She put the photograph back in the file, closed the folder and tied the ribbon around it once more.
“Find Milton,” she said. “Find him and kill him.”
