  137. About Mark Dawson

Milton lowered himself to his knees and then flattened himself to the damp grass. There came a crash through the vegetation as another man joined the first; Milton didn’t know which one of them attended to him, but he felt the point of a knee in the small of his back and the nick of cable ties as they bit into the flesh of his wrists.

“Is that her?” the second man said to the first.

“That’s her. I’d recognise her anywhere.”

“Good work.”

“What about the big guy? Went through the stream.”

“Call it in.”

Milton watched from the ground as La Bruja was secured. Their eyes met. She blazed hatred at him.

“We got her,” the first man reported, presumably into a radio. “We got her and another guy. Third man went north into the jungle. We’ll bring the ones we got back. Request backup.”

The man removed his boot from Milton’s back. “Get up.”

It wasn’t easy with his arms secured, but Milton rolled onto his side and jerked himself up into a sitting position.

“I said up, you sack of shit.”

The soldier grabbed the restraint and tugged at it, hard. Milton winced in pain, using the show of discomfort to mask a quick check of his surroundings. The second soldier had secured La Bruja, her wrists fastened with similar plastic cuffs. Milton looked beyond the trees, but all he could see was darkness. Eidur was gone.

The soldiers were dressed in jungle multicam with wide brimmed boonies and jungle boots. They wore knee pads and netting scarves, with every square inch of exposed skin daubed in black camo paint. They carried machetes in scabbards that were fitted across their backs, and belt knives, both useful for slicing through vegetation. They wore recon kit bags and tactical gloves and were both well armed: the man on the right had a shotgun and the man on the left an HK416 carbine. Both were using night-vision goggles.

They were well armed and professional. American special forces? DELTA or a SEAL team, he guessed. Getting away from them was going to be very difficult indeed.

The soldier shoved Milton in the back and he stumbled ahead.

“Move.”
