  137. About Mark Dawson

“They’re keeping it on the down-low,” Navarro said. “The Colombians don’t know anything about it, much less that she’s been taken. I understand that the FBI looked at sending a helicopter to fly her out, but they decided against it. It would’ve been a long flight over dangerous terrain, and then there’s the question of where it would put down.”

“They could have taken her to the coast.”

“They looked at that, too. Too dicey.”

“And so?”

“It’s quite elaborate,” Navarro said. “The Colombians think the Americans are in country to lead a joint investigation into the cartel. They have no idea that the operation has already happened. They took her out of the jungle, put her in the back of a truck and drove her to a safe house in Medellín. They’re going to fly a jet to Olaya Herrera and rendition her from there.”

“When?”

“The jet is scheduled to land tonight.”

“So we need to move fast.”

“You do,” Lincoln said. “We don’t want to waste the investment that we’ve made in the cartel by losing her. Her influence in Mexico and Colombia has already been useful, and there’s a lot more potential there that we haven’t tapped. We cannot have her leaving the country.”

“Another thing,” Navarro said. “We want to question the FBI agent who has her. If she’s in the car when they transport her, you should bring her with you.”

Control nodded. “I’ll speak to my people.”

“Thank you.”

“What if we think she’s been compromised? She knows a lot.”

Lincoln sighed. “Too much to risk that she might talk. We’re looking into it, but that might be a call for whoever gets to her.”

“And I have operational freedom on that?”

“You do.”

“Send me the details of the safe house,” she said. “I’ll have it scouted.”

She shuffled around the booth and stood.

“You can’t stay?”

“You said it was urgent.”

“It is.”

“Then I need to get started.”

Lincoln slid out of the booth and stood. He put his hand on her shoulder. “Thank you, Control. We appreciate your help.”

She found his touch repugnant, but was experienced enough to mask her distaste.

“Send me the intel,” she said. “I’ll let you know if I need anything else.”
