  137. About Mark Dawson

He took two empty cigarette packets and placed them at the location of the safe house. “Our intelligence suggests that they’ll go in convoy. Two cars.” He tapped a finger on one pack and then the other. “La Bruja will be in the lead car with backup behind. The airport is to the east of the city—a forty-minute drive, maybe less when it’s quieter at night and they’re pushing it.” Björn moved the packets along the roughly drawn roads. “They’ll come out of the compound here and head to Calle 32. My best guess is that they’ll go left onto Avenida 80 and then right onto Avenida 33. It’s a straight shot through the city and then out to the airport from there.”

Ten tucked a loose frond of hair behind her ear. “So we hit them there?”

“No,” Björn said. “The road is too wide and it’ll be busy, even if they go late. The best place is here.” He moved the packets to the point on the map where Calle 32 connected to Avenida 80. “This is a narrow two-lane road. One way only with poor visibility. There’s a barrier to the left and buildings to the right, and here”—he laid his finger on a stretch of the map—“one lane has been closed while they dig it up. It’s a pinch point. If we pen them in there, there’ll be nowhere for them to go.”

“That works,” Eight said. “How do you want to do it?”

“Three vehicles,” Björn said. “I’ll have the van. Ten, Eleven—you’ll ride with me.”

The two agents nodded their agreement.

“Six—you take the Toyota. I want the drone in the air so we can track them without being too obvious about it. Close in and assist once we stop them.”

“Right,” Six said.

“Two, Eight—you’ve got the minivan.”

The agents nodded.

“Six—you give the signal when they set off, and then I want you to get eyes on the cars from the ground.”

“Yep,” she said.

Björn pointed to the junction of Avenida 80 and Calle 32.

“We’re going to split up the convoy,” Björn said. He took a matchbox and a lighter and positioned them on the map. “The minivan waits here”—Björn placed the matchbox at the junction where Calle 32 met Carrera 82—“and you’ll get in between the two vehicles.” He moved the matchbox ahead, pushing it between the two cigarette packets. “You fake a problem so you can stop the trail car before they get to the next junction.”

“Isolating the lead car,” Two said.

Björn nodded. He took the lighter and placed it on the junction with Avenida 80. “I’ll be waiting here.” He moved the lighter forward so that it was blocking the road. “I’ll close the trap, and then we get her out.”
