He staggered back to the table, picked up his chair, and sat down, snorting and wiping his nose with the back of his hand. He rummaged around in his jacket pockets until he found his phone, and after he had closed one eye so that he could focus on the screen, he managed to poke out Feargal’s number.
‘Feargal! It’s Barry, boy, who did you think it was? Listen, I need you to fetch me some fags and a six-pack of Satz. What? I’m at home. I said, I’m at home. Yes. Yes, I know, but she’s feeling a bit shook. Thanks a million, boy. I’ll see you in a while.’
He sat back. Megan lay where she was for three or four minutes, and then she lifted her head and looked around. Her chin was bearded with blood and her left eye was puffed up and closed. She said nothing, but awkwardly climbed on to her feet and limped out of the kitchen.
‘I suppose you want me to feel sorry for you!’ Barry shouted after her. ‘Well, that’ll teach you to do what I fecking tell you when I fecking tell you to do it!’
As he shouted that, he wet himself, and it ran off the vinyl chair seat and dripped on to the kitchen floor. He closed his eyes and whispered, ‘Shite,’ because even he knew that he couldn’t call Megan back to mop it up, as she usually did.

As soon as she returned to Anglesea Street, Katie went down to the laboratory to see Bill Phinner. He was sitting at his desk eating a giant cheese bap and when she came to his office he pointed to his mouth and made muffled noises to indicate that he couldn’t speak.
‘No rush, Bill,’ she told him. ‘My ma always used to say that I should chew my food a hundred times.’
She sat down next to him and waited until he had chewed and swallowed his mouthful and taken a swig from a bottle of blackcurrant Mi Wadi. Then she said, ‘I’ve just come back from the morgue to take a sconce at Justice Quinn. I was wondering if you’d had the results yet of his CT scan. Oh – and, by the way, do you know about Billy Hagerty?’
‘Billy Hagerty? What, being a trannie? I do of course. But Dr Kelley asked me and my technicians not to say anything to you before you went to see her. She wanted to show you for herself, like. I think she gets a buzz out of being a bit dramatic sometimes.’
