‘You told us a couple of important details about what happened that we didn’t know before. If they lead to a conviction, I’ll see if I can persuade the powers that be at Anglesea Street to give you some kind of reward.’
‘What did I say? You have me pure bamboozled like, now.’
‘Don’t let it bother you, Peadar,’ said Dr Power, patting the knee of his worn brown corduroy trousers. ‘These two detectives, they’re almost psychic. They know what you’re thinking before you can think it.’
Detective Cullen pressed his hand to his forehead and said, ‘Like, I know what you’ll be eating for your lunch today. O’Neal’s Irish Stew.’
Peadar burst out laughing. ‘Holy Saint Joseph! How in the name of God Almighty did you know that, boy?’
It was only when the two detectives and Dr Power were back in their car that Detective Walsh asked Detective Cullen the same question.
‘Easy,’ he said, as he steered out of Sunnyside and headed back towards the city centre. ‘I saw the tin on his kitchen table when we walked in. My mam used to feed it to us almost every week because she couldn’t cook for shite.’

At a quarter past ten the next morning, Katie’s phone rang and it was Muireann. Her voice was breathy and furtive.
‘Tommy’s cancelled the party. Something about a gas leak, and so The Weavers is closed. You didn’t fix that, did you? If you did, I’m so relieved I can’t tell you.’
‘What’s he planning to do?’ Katie asked her. ‘Cancel it altogether or arrange to hold it at some other pub?’
‘He’s going to wait until the gas leak’s been fixed because he wants to hold it at The Weavers. Besides, it’s too late now to shift it to anywhere else. Maybe we’ll be having it next week.’
‘All right. Perfect. Just make sure you stay well away from Gerald Griffin Street. And – please, whatever you do, don’t let on to Megan that the party’s cancelled. Barry Riordan mustn’t catch even a whisper of it.’
‘Megan won’t be in any danger, will she? Jesus Christ, I think the poor girl’s suffered more than enough.’
‘No, Muireann. But I’m hoping that finally – finally, we’re going to wipe out Barry Riordan and his gang of gowls for good and all. And as soon as we have them locked up, I promise you, we’ll be going after the O’Flynns.’
‘I’ll be saying a prayer for you, Kathleen. And for myself. And for Bryanna. It’s the least she deserves.’
