‘Good luck to you is all I can say.’
‘Well, until we do, I have nothing further to ask you. That’s unless you change your mind and want to volunteer some information about who that fellow was and what he was up to.’
‘I do not.’
‘I’m not going to arrest you today, but I have to advise you not to leave Cork for the time being. I’ll be needing to question you again.’
‘You can question me until you’re purple in the face, Kathleen, but whether I’ll be giving you any answers, that’s a different matter altogether. I’m a lawyer and I know my rights. And what I said to you will still apply. If you try to accuse me of having anything at all to do with Garrett’s death, just remember the name of Phinean Joyce.’
Katie was close to telling Orla that she wasn’t going to give in to blackmail, but she closed her mouth tightly and kept it closed. Without saying anything else, she went out to the hallway, tugged on her rushers and buttoned up her raincoat, and opened the front door. Outside the rain was still pelting down – harder than it had rained for weeks.
Orla followed her out on to the porch and watched her as she hurried across to her waiting car. By the time Katie had climbed into the passenger seat, though, and turned around, she had gone back inside and closed the front door behind her.
‘So what was that all about?’ asked Robert. ‘Will we not be taking her in?’
‘We will, but not yet. She refuses to co-operate and so far we don’t have enough evidence to arrest her.’
‘We have the CCTV.’
‘Yes, but she knows her legal onions and who knows what story she could come up with? She could say that fellow was a motor mechanic who’d come to fix Justice Quinn’s car – or maybe some acquaintance of his that she’d never met before, and he was letting him have a go driving it. Until we find him, Robert, we’ll have to put it on the long finger.’
‘I’ll bet you twenty-two to one that herself had a hand in Justice Quinn getting cremated,’ said Detective Sergeant Begley. ‘In fact, I’ll bet you she paid the fellow to do it. But what if we never find him? He could have left the country by now.’
‘Don’t be a pessimist, Sean. Just because the sea is full of herring, that doesn’t mean you can’t catch the one herring you’re after.’
‘Who said that?’
‘I did.’
