  60. An Invitation from the Publisher

‘Muireann Nic Riada? Now there’s a girl with a nerve of steel, no mistake about that. How’s she going on?’

Katie explained what Muireann had told her about the party at The Weavers, and Detective Sergeant Begley whistled and shook his head.

‘Jesus. That might start out as nothing but a scrap but there’ll be blood on the walls before you know it. Them Riordans and them O’Flynns – they’ve been champing at the bit lately. They’re bursting to knock chunks out of each other.’

‘I’m not going to give them the chance,’ said Katie. ‘The papers have slagged me off more than enough because I haven’t yet stamped out all of the local gangs. Well, now’s the time I’m going to do it, even if it means turning a blind eye to their so-called human rights. By the end of tomorrow I want to see Barry Riordan and his thugs behind bars, and by the end of next week I want to see Thomas O’Flynn and his thugs locked up. I don’t care what the charges are. I’ll make them up if I have to. Picking their noses in public, anything. And after the Riordans and the O’Flynns, I’m going to go after all the rest of them – the Romanians and the Nigerians and the Real IRA – even if I have to spend my whole year’s budget in a month.’

Detective Sergeant Begley was driving, but he turned around and looked at Robert, who was sitting in the back seat behind Katie. He gave him a look that meant, Holy Mary, have you ever heard DS Maguire talk like this before – like, ever? She’s fuming!

By the time they reached Tivoli Park, it was raining hard. They pulled up outside the Quinn house, and as they did so, Orla appeared at the front door, wearing a beige trench coat and opening up an umbrella.

Katie raised her witch’s hood and walked quickly across to the porch.

‘What are you doing here?’ frowned Orla. ‘What’s that police car for?’

‘We need to have a word with you, Orla. Can we go inside?’

‘I’m on my way out. I have a hairdressing appointment and then lunch with my solicitor.’

‘I’m afraid you’ll have to cancel the hairdresser. You may need to see your solicitor, though. Not for lunch, but later.’

‘What’s this all about? I don’t have to talk to you if I don’t want to. Besides, I have nothing to say to you that I haven’t said already.’

Katie had now been joined by Robert, Detective Sergeant Begley and Detective Scanlan. They stood behind her, impassively, with the rain pattering on to their shoulders.

Robert said, ‘Even if you don’t want to talk to us, Mrs Quinn, we’d appreciate it if we could come in out of the wet.’
