Kyna said, ‘No, no, darling – not yet,’ and flopped down on to her side. ‘You relax first… let me give you a cuddle and soothe away all of that stress. Come here, Katie, you deserve it and you need it. You know you do. I can’t have you falling apart. You will for sure if you go on like this.’

Katie hesitated, but then she eased herself back down again. Kyna put her arms around her shoulders and drew her close towards her, so that her cheek was pressed against her small soft breast.

‘We have the whole night ahead of us, darling,’ she said, stroking Katie’s forehead. ‘You’ll have all the time you need, and when you’re ready you can do to me whatever takes your fancy.’

‘That’s it,’ said Thomas O’Flynn. ‘We’re going after them Riordans now, the lot of them. No picking and no choosing. If their name’s Riordan or they’re one of their family or one of their gang, that’s it. We’ll be opening up the trapdoor to Hell for them and dropping them down it, same like we did with that blithering eejit O’Malley.’

‘That was a drain we dropped him down,’ said Breaslain.

‘I’m talking metamaphorically, for the love of Christ,’ Thomas O’Flynn snapped back at him. ‘It doesn’t matter a multicoloured shite where we dispose of their bodies, it’s their souls that’ll be going down to meet his Satanic Majesty.’

‘Kind of drastic, like, hitting all of them,’ said Darragh. ‘The razzers will be on to us like a ton of wet manure, won’t they?’

‘You think that’s drastic? They was out to murder every one of us on Saturday, old dolls and gasúns, too! If it hadn’t been for that fecking gas leak, they could have taken us all out. I still want to find out what sneaky snake told them we was holding Maddie’s party there at The Weavers. But that gas leak – that was God looking after us there, boy, and no mistake.’

‘The razzers topped three of them, though, didn’t they, and lifted the rest? And I heard on the grapevine that Feargal Grífin got himself shot, although it wasn’t like fatal or nothing.’

‘Feargal Grífin? That header? I thought he’d taken himself above to Dublin to join the Malone gang.’

‘He did. But he came back down again. I think his ma lives in Carrigaline and she’s getting on a bit. And you know him. He’d do a job for anybody. I reckon he’d even do a job for us if we offered him enough grade.’
