She hadn’t even taken off her coat before her phone pinged. It was a text message from Dr Mary Kelley. ‘Preliminary X-rays of Justice Quinn’s body show no foreign objects e.g. bullets. 98 pc 4th-degree burns but no other obvious physical trauma (penetrative stab wounds etc). Skull intact. No broken/fractured bones. Sufficient bodily fluids retrieved for CT scanning – awaiting results.’
Katie sat down and read the text again. If Garrett hadn’t been shot or stabbed, then how had he been killed? Further tests might reveal that he had been unconscious before his car was set alight. Maybe he had simply been told at gunpoint to stay in the driver’s seat.
But why in the name of God had he driven up to White’s Cross, in the middle of nowhere? It was unlikely that he had been heading for Castletownroche because his car was facing south-westwards, in the opposite direction. And who was driving the grey or silver SUV that the farmer had seen speeding away? Could it have been that silvery-grey Range Rover that Orla had spotted parked outside their house in Tivoli Park?
Detective Sergeant Begley appeared in her open door and coughed to get her attention. Detective Scanlan was close behind him.
‘Sean, come on in. What’s the story?’
‘Stephen Herlihy at the courthouse has given us all the information on Justice Quinn’s trials that you asked him for. He’s made a list of every case that he conducted over the past two years, either by himself or sitting with another justice. He’s also attached the two separate lists that you wanted – every defendant that Justice Quinn found guilty, and every defendant that he fined or jailed, or both.’
Katie quickly shuffled through the lists and said, ‘Mother of God. There’s a fair few here all right.’
‘One hundred and twelve, to be exact. Padragain and me will be combing through them to see if there’s any possible suspects who might have had cause to look for revenge. I hate to say it, but I know almost all of the scummers that Justice Quinn has sent down – and their scummy families, too. But, you know, most of them are too thick to send a kid to piss through your letter box, never mind set up a hit like this one.’
