‘May God forgive you,’ she said, ‘because I never will.’ With that, she walked off to join Detective Sergeant Begley and Detective Scanlan.

At 3:30 p.m., Katie held a media briefing so that she could tell the press that Feargal Grífin had been charged with the murder of Justice Quinn and that Orla Quinn had been arrested for instigating it. She also told them that Feargal was being held for the killing of Timbo Coffey.

On top of that, she announced the arrest of Breaslain Hoobin for the murder of Tadhg Kimmons and Davey Horgan, although she said nothing about him being identified as the man who had carried the bomb into the School of Pharmacy at UCC.

‘It sounds like you’ve been outdoing yourself, Detective Superintendent,’ said Dan Keane from the Examiner, with his usual cigarette behind his ear. ‘What happened to the floppy top cop?’

‘You’ll have to ask your colleague Owen Dineen about that,’ Katie replied, and at the back of the room, Owen Dineen grunted in amusement.

‘There’s always ups and downs when it comes to keeping law and order,’ Katie continued. ‘It’s a game of catch-up. All of a sudden we’ll have some gang smuggling in girls for sex from some country we’ve never even heard of, or another gang peddling a party drug that’s only just been invented. Then for no reason at all we’ll have a fashion among the young gangs for stabbing each other, or for buzzing around the city centre on mopeds grabbing people’s mobile phones. I fully admit that it takes us some time to identify what’s going on, but once we have, I believe that my team of detectives here in Cork is the most effective in the country, and the announcements that I’ve been able to make this afternoon are solid proof of that.’

Owen Dineen raised his hand. ‘So how’s it coming on with the bombing at the pharmacy lab? You’ve said nothing at all on that, have you, even though that was the biggest loss of life that we’ve ever had in Cork in one single criminal outrage.’

Katie looked down to Brendan, who was sitting beside her. Technically, he was supposed to be chairing this briefing, but he had little choice except to allow Katie to take it over, since she knew all the relevant facts about the arrests that she had made. Besides that, the press were eager to know how she was fighting back against the accusations of incompetence that had been made against her in the Sun. That was a story in itself.
