‘I’ve decided to quit the Garda. I’m going to go in to see Brendan tomorrow morning first thing and I’m going to hand in my notice. If I do that, he won’t be able to use those pictures to blackmail you any more, and we can be together without you fearing to lose your job.’
‘Kyna – you’re one of the best officers in my team. I can’t afford to lose you. Sweetheart – I appreciate what you’re trying to do, and believe me I’m more than grateful. But I don’t expect you to give up your career because of me. That would be such a waste of your talents. And think about it – if you quit – what on earth would you do?’
Kyna looked at her steadily, her blue eyes glistening with tears. She was easily one of the most beautiful young women that Katie had ever known. Not traditionally beautiful, but with elfin bone structure that made her look as if she had just appeared out of a lis, or a fairy hill.
‘I’d find something to do all right. I can cook. I’m good with figures. I can drive. Maybe I could set up one of those roadside chippers.’
‘I hope you’re codding me. Like, seriously, Kyna, I’ll find a way of dealing with Brendan. I have at least as much on him as he has on me. I was going to tell you tomorrow, but I’ve had his phone calls hacked and I’ve found out that he’s been paying that Owen Dineen to write stories that make me look as if I’m incompetent.’
Kyna’s mouth opened. ‘For real? That’s incredible. But it’s terrible, too. But you’ve had his phone hacked? That’ll land you into a whole heap of trouble, surely?’
‘It could do, true. It depends how I play it. But I said to myself that if Brendan’s going to shoot me down in flames, he’s coming down with me. If they give me the sack, I can always join you running that chipper, can’t I? Conor always said I did the best fry he’d ever tasted.’
‘Talking of that, are you hungry?’
‘I’m not at all, after today. I have a pizza in the freezer, though, if you are.’
‘I’m starving, for some reason. I could eat the proverbial nun’s bum through the bars of a convent gate.’
‘Sorry. You’ll have to make do with pizza.’

After Kyna had eaten, they sat together on the couch until the fire had died down to ashes. Katie shooed the dogs into the kitchen and then she and Kyna went into the bedroom.
