She had only coffee and two ginger biscuits for breakfast because she would be meeting Kieran for lunch, and then she took Barney and Foltchain for a walk as far as the Passage West ferry terminal. It was a windy morning, and all the boats were bobbing up and down like Riverdance. She hadn’t crossed the river to Monkstown for over a month now, ever since she and her sisters had put her father’s house up for sale. She couldn’t help remembering the smile on her father’s face when she had told him that she wanted to join An Garda Síochána, the only one of her sisters to keep up the family tradition.
‘You’ll make your mark all right,’ he had told her. ‘You’ll see. You’ll have every criminal in Cork begging you for mercy.’

She arrived at Anglesea Street at a quarter past eleven. When she walked into her office she was surprised to find Bill Phinner and Aoife Shaughnessy, his new ballistics expert, sitting on the couches by the window, drinking tea and eating chocolate fingers.
‘How’s it going, ma’am?’ asked Bill. ‘We came up to see you and Patrick O’Donovan said you’d be here in a jiffy so we decided to wait for you. We thought you’d be wanting to see this in person.’
‘What have you found, Bill?’
Aoife held up an evidence bag with two cartridge cases in it, and another bag with the Glock automatic pistol that had been taken from Feargal Grífin after Katie had shot him.
‘We picked these cartridge cases out of the gutter in MacCurtain Street after you and Justice Connolly were shot at. They match the rounds exactly that were found in that burned-out Honda at Bottlehill after Billy Hagerty was shot and next to Timbo Coffey’s body. Not only that, all four rounds were fired from this same pistol.
‘AFIS had no record of the fingerprints we sent up to be checked from the first two cartridge cases, but no matter. There are partial fingerprints on these other two here that match them, and they all match the fingerprints on the pistol itself. There are no other prints on it, so I think we can reasonably assume that whoever shot Billy Hagerty was the same offender who shot Timbo Coffey and who shot at you and Justice Connolly, too.’
