Chapters (60)
‘I’m pretty certain it’ll come to me, sure like,’ said Detective Sergeant Begley. ‘It’s the way he walked, more than anything else. Like somebody with a gammy hip, do you know what I mean?’
‘Right, then. In the meantime, can you tell Cullen and Walsh to contact the Facial Recognition unit and see if they can find a match for that fellow who was driving Justice Quinn’s Jaguar.’
‘Do you know, I have the distinct feeling that I’ve come across him before, too.’
‘If you can remember who he is, all well and good, but you may not need to, and we may not need the AFR, either. Let’s pay a visit to Orla Quinn. It’s plain that she knows him, so maybe we can persuade her to tell us. Robert – can you see if Padragain Scanlan’s free to come with us? And ask Superintendent Pearse for two uniforms to back us up. If what we saw in that CCTV footage is anything to go by, we’ll be hauling her in for questioning, no doubt about it. I’ll see you downstairs.’
Once Robert and Detective Sergeant Begley had left her office, Katie put on her shiny black raincoat with the pointed hood. It was starting to rain, and if Orla really had organized Garrett’s murder, then she couldn’t think of anything more appropriate to wear.
Although it was hard to draw any other conclusion from the CCTV footage, she still found it difficult to believe that Orla would have wanted to harm him. She and Garrett had been married for such a long time, and her grief had seemed so genuine.
She went to tell Moirin that she was going out again, but she hadn’t even reached her office door before her phone rang. She was tempted to leave it, but it kept on ringing so she went back and picked it up.
‘DS Maguire.’
‘Kathleen? It’s Muireann.’
‘What’s the story, Muireann?’
‘They’re holding a big twenty-first birthday party tomorrow afternoon at The Weavers.’
‘The O’Flynns, you mean?’
There was a lengthy silence, and Katie thought she could hear music in the background, and a man shouting. Then Muireann said, ‘I’ve been warned off going. It seems like the Riordans are planning to mess it up, like.’
‘When you say “mess it up”—’
‘I don’t know. I’m not sure, like. But it was Megan Riordan who told me not to go.’
‘You and Megan Riordan – you’re friends? I didn’t know that.’
