Kyna nodded. ‘Her stepma was pretty sure it must be the same one she used to wear at school. Like, being in the school sports team and winning prizes, that was the high point of her life. After she left school she had no friends at all – never had a boyfriend, neither. When she lived at home she spent most of her time in her bedroom, playing Fortnite or whatever. Now and again, though, she’d go out jogging, or at least that’s what she told her ma she was doing. It was maybe once or twice a week, but then she’d be out for hours.’
‘What do you think?’ said Katie. ‘It sounds like she’s a pure close match to the psychological profile that Dr Power gave us, do you know? Somebody who feels isolated from the rest of the world and grows more and more resentful about it as the time goes by. We can’t jump to conclusions. I mean – maybe this Doireann Greaney is just a lonely young woman who can’t seem to get along with anybody. Maybe the fact that she wears a grey tracksuit is just a coincidence. But you do need to go and talk to her, at the very least.’
‘I will of course. I’ll take Jack Cushley with me, but he can stay in the car unless things go pear-shaped. I have the feeling this is going to be one of those interviews that needs to be one-to-one, whether she’s the Pusher or not.’
She hesitated, and then she said, ‘How’s it going with himself?’
‘Brendan? Stalemate, at the moment. I think that’s what you would call it. If he tries to report us, he knows that we could just as easy report him.’
‘I know. But this is keeping me awake at night, I tell you.’
‘Well, don’t let it. We’ve done nothing illegal. I’m keeping my eyes and my ears open as far as Brendan’s concerned, that’s all. I don’t trust him thicker than a sheet of paper.’
‘Okay. I know I’m sounding like a jibber, but I just can’t help it. I don’t want to see you hurt.’
‘Everything will work out, Kyna, don’t you worry.’ Katie got up from her desk and was about to give Kyna a quick reassuring hug and a kiss when Moirin walked in.
‘I’m so sorry, ma’am. I clean forgot to tell you, what with that bomb going off over at the college and all the confusion. While you were out, Justice Connolly rang you. He wanted to know if you might be free tomorrow evening maybe for dinner. Here – he’s left his private number for you.’
‘Justice Connolly? Thanks a million, Moirin. Tomorrow evening? I’ll have to see how things go.’
