  52. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I scrunch my nose. “Would it help if I said the humans in the comics were the bad guys and the robots were nice?”

She snort-laughs. “Oh, the lies fiction lets us tell.” She pauses for a moment before a mischievous grin bursts across her face. “Hey, I have an idea. How would you feel about a little tour?”

“I think I’ve seen most of the Colony,” I admit, the gloom spilling out of me.

Shura nudges my shoulder like she wants me to perk up. “Not the Colony. I’m talking about going out there—seeing Victory.”

My heart pings. “I’m… I’m allowed outside?”

She shrugs. “Annika would probably insist you had more training, but you’re not a prisoner. Besides, I think seeing Infinity would help you.” Her face turns serious. “You need to see what it’s really like, and what we’re trying to stop. You never know—a little bit of motivation might be exactly the spark you need.”

My excitement falters. I’d love to go aboveground—to see sunlight and hear the whistle of wind in the trees. But they aren’t the only things existing outside these walls. “I can’t control my consciousness. I wouldn’t know what to do if I ran into a Resident.”

Shura loops her arm around mine and tugs. “I can veil us. We can visit the market—something easy for your first time.” She pulls me toward the door. “I walked in on you yelling at yourself in a mirror. Trust me—you need this.”

When I think about leaving this room and the mental cage I’ve been trapped in since I got here, my heart begins to glow, flickering like a fire that’s desperate to stay lit.

Shura’s right. I do need this. Because regardless of whether Victory is Resident territory or not, I’ve been underground for what feels like months.

I might be dead, but I still need to breathe.

“You’re sure it’s safe? And Annika won’t be mad?” I ask, too hopeful to hide it.

“I’ll be with you the entire time.” Shura’s gray eyes twinkle. “And in my experience, it’s better to beg forgiveness than ask for permission.”

A smile creeps up on me. “Okay. Let’s go see Victory.” I follow Shura to the doorway and pause. “But… they’re not going to stab me again when we get back, are they? To make sure I’m still me?”

Shura waves a hand like this won’t be a problem at all. “Oh no, definitely not. Yeong already marked you with an imprint, so you’ll be fine.”

And before I have a chance to ask what in the world she’s talking about, she’s pulling me toward the outer tunnels.

SHURA’S FOOTSTEPS PAD THROUGH THE North Tunnel like a leopard in the snow. Careful. Silent. Like she belongs here.
