Chapters (52)
I breathe deeply, searching for stillness I’m not sure will ever be possible in Infinity again.
So instead, I find the one person who tethers my heart not just to this world, but to any world. The face of hope.
I think of Mei.
The whispers catch like fire, and my eyes flash open, alert.
“Fin… sss…,” they say.
I frown, concentrating harder, staring at the explosion of stardust overhead.
The whispers become clearer, and the hissing subsides. The next time they speak, I hear their voices like a bell in the darkness.
“Find us.”
And then I see it, lighting the sky like an arrow stretching toward the horizon: a row of blinking lights, just like the ones I saw the day I arrived in Infinity.
A line of stars leading to safety.
I push myself to my feet, and I don’t stop running. All the while, I never take my eyes off the blinking stars.
I follow the lights into the infinite unknown, traveling for days without stopping. I don’t know what I’m looking for, or what to expect, until the unmistakable sight appears where sky meets sand.
A walled city, surrounded by clouds, stretching far beyond the horizon. And I realize it’s not just a city—it’s a new world, hidden from Resident eyes. Eyes that can’t see the stars.
Eyes that don’t know the way.
I approach the towering gates, and they open in one smooth motion, as if they’ve been waiting for me all this time. Light pours out, and I shield my eyes with the back of my hand. The feeling of being welcomed home envelops me, and for a moment I feel so light-headed I wonder if I’m flying.
I call out to the light, but it doesn’t answer; it simply waits, like a patient friend. Squinting, I try to make sense of what’s beyond these walls.
When the light fades and my eyes settle on the city, I fall to my knees, tears streaming down my cheeks.
It was here all along—a safe haven. Paradise.
I recognize the warmth that fills my soul, lifting me inside the city like a mother embracing their child.
And I know I am safe.
For the first time since my death, I find peace.

I guess I wasn’t going to get away with writing a book about mortality and the afterlife without talking about it in some way. So… here’s a true story.
