  52. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In an instant, our hands glow white, lighting our faces with a silvery hue. I look up at Gil, who hasn’t taken his eyes off me.

“Was that you or me?” I ask.

As if in response, the forest lights up around us. Glowing white orbs float in every direction, moving around us like a dance of stars. It’s haunting and beautiful and perfect.

I let my smile grow. “Now you’re just showing off.”

Gil studies my face. He’s so close, I can see every lash and hazel fleck in his eyes. I can smell firewood on his clothes and leaves in his hair. I see the way his mouth always sits a little crooked—like he has so much he wants to say but doesn’t.

And yet he still feels ten thousand miles away.

I open my mouth to speak, but suddenly the lights vanish and Gil lets go of my hand. The hardness in his brow returns, and I cradle my palm against my chest like I’ve been wounded.

“We should get back. It’s not safe out here,” he says, stalking back toward the docks.

I don’t follow him right away.

I’m too busy trying to catch my breath.

“DID YOU REALLY THINK I wouldn’t find out what you two were up to?” Annika stands in front of the hologram of Prince Caelan’s palace, the familiar sight turning slowly in place.

Theo and I exchange glances.

Gil, my mind spits. Of course he told on me. That smug-faced, double-crossing traitor.

When am I going to learn we aren’t friends?

I refrain from rolling my eyes. “I don’t know what Gil said, but—”

“Gil didn’t say anything,” Annika cuts in, and I hate how instantly my heart lightens. “We overheard Prince Caelan in the council room discussing how much he was looking forward to the Bloodmoon. In particular, his interest in seeing a certain friend again.”

My cheeks darken. Theo looks sheepish beside me.

“You disobeyed my orders,” she says. “And went behind my back. And put our plans at risk. Not to mention you put yourselves in danger.”

The silence makes my ears ring.

“But”—Annika sighs—“I won’t deny this could work in our favor.”

“You’re not mad?” I ask nervously.

“Oh, I’m mad,” she corrects, voice mellow despite the wildfire growing behind her amber eyes. “But I don’t have time to let my feelings get hurt. Not when there’s a festival coming up and plans that need to be made.”

“You want me to go to the Bloodmoon?” I pull my face back in surprise.
