  52. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“I trust the possibility. And I think you believe in a better world just as much as I do.” I take a careful breath. “But mostly, I trust that if there were ever a way to make coexisting possible, then you’d be the one capable of making it happen.”

Prince Caelan is quiet for a long time, our breathing and the whistle of leaves the only sound around us.

“Is that really what you think? Or are you just telling me what you believe I want to hear?” he asks softly, the worry stinging his eyes.

I wonder how often people are honest with him. I wonder how often he craves it.

I stare up at his silver eyes and bury my betrayal as far down in my heart as I can muster. My face is a lie, and I may have ulterior motives for being here, but my words? My voice?

It’s my greatest strength. Maybe now more than ever.

Our gaze never breaks. “I mean it with my whole heart, Your Highness.”

His smile is so pure, I worry it will be my undoing.

“AND SHE DIDN’T SAY ANYTHING?” Ahmet sets the crumpled note on the table in front of him.

I shake my head. “I don’t think she could speak. It seemed hard for her to even get this much out.” I motion toward the word. “I’m still not sure what ‘listen’ means.”

Theo scrunches his nose. “Are you sure that’s what it says?”

“I can sort of see it.” Shura squints at the scrap of paper. “There’s definitely an i. And maybe a t.”

Annika paces behind them, arms crossed seriously at her chest. She’s hardly said a word since I told her about the servant girl being aware. Since I showed her proof.

I look at Theo apologetically. “I didn’t get a chance to find out if there were more humans like her, or if anyone else has regained their consciousness.”

He gives a brief nod, understanding I’m talking about Martin.

“How have we never had proof of humans waking up before?” Ahmet glances at Annika, brows furrowed. “Is it possible we missed something?”

She purses her lips. “I’m not sure I like the idea of us missing something this significant. I’m more inclined to believe this girl is a one-off; maybe she only pretended to take the pill, or maybe her consciousness managed to adapt differently.”

“She wasn’t faking it.” The instinct to protect her rolls through me, making my shoulders tense. “I could see it—her struggle to break free of whatever the Residents did to her. And if she managed to wake up, we have to assume it’s possible for other humans to do the same.” My gaze follows Annika as she moves behind the table. “We have to do something to help her.”
