Apparently, it was my turn to yell. “I don’t know what in the hell you are talking about, Wes. I wish I did. I literally just got back from being secluded at a cabin in the mountains with no cell signal and the damn internet was kept off.” Again, no one needed to know about my Netflix binge, since that was the only thing that I used internet for. “I had to study for exams this week, and unfortunately, when I was home all I could see were headlines about how my husband was hanging out with his ex-girlfriend in more nightclubs halfway around the world, on a trip he didn’t bother to ask me to tag along on because I have exams.”
Wes stood there looking like a guppy, freshly pulled out of the water. His lips worked, as if he wanted to say something, but nothing came out. Then he shook it off and stalked closer, eyeing my parents. “You didn’t bother to tell her?”
“She came through the door about five minutes before you did,” my mother informed him.
“Shit!” the one word was hissed through clenched teeth as he strode forward and grabbed hold of my right bicep. I didn’t know what was with the men in my life, always trying to tow me here or there via my upper arm, but I was just about tired of it.
“Let go of me!” The demand fell on deaf ears as Wes pulled me to the couch in the sitting room and then eased me back onto it until my ass met with the cushions there. “Who the hell do you think you are?”
“You need to sit down for this,” he insisted.
“For what?”
“Reggie was killed in Helsinki. Tuck was seriously injured. He was flown back to Atlanta yesterday and is being looked after in a hospital there right now.”
“What?” The word slipped out of my mouth as I tried to wrap my brain around what he had just said. “What did you say?”
“Your husband is in the hospital in Atlanta, recovering. His father was killed while in Helsinki.”
“We need to go to the hospital!” I demanded as I stood up and got ready to march back out to the driveway.
“Not so fast,” Wes told me as he moved to make me take a seat again. “We need to get you up to speed first, since you clearly know nothing that has happened. Why weren’t you responding to any of Tuck’s messages?”
“My phone has been off since I left Thursday to go to the mountains.”
“Okay, what about before then?”
I laughed. “Before Thursday? I haven’t heard from my husband since he told me, in person, that he was going on a trip the next day to Finland for business.”
“What? That’s not true.”
“Don’t tell me what’s true.” I dug my phone out of my pocket and tossed it at him. “See for yourself.”
Wes turned my phone on and saw all the messages coming in from everyone who had been concerned about me, but I didn’t think any of them would have been from Tucker. He glanced up at me then, an apology in his eyes. “He never texted you,” Wes told me, sounding kind of stunned and far away as he did.
