I really have a special gift, this ability to transform myself. Most actors have it, and it’s a natural talent. I smile as I drive out of The Cove and head toward town. Others would be envious of my ability to hide in plain sight, my natural capacity to watch and follow, and then to be seen when I’m ready.
Soon, people will know my name. That’s my next step. After I resolve the central conflict of my life at the moment, once my plan has been implemented. I’ll move back to LA, live in a far better, more luxurious area than where pathetic Elizabeth James lives and give acting a go again. Who needs another house here in sleepy Orange County? Not me, and I’m surprised I allowed myself to dream of it. I’m meant to be in LA.
A new beat. Cue the applause. It’s almost time for me to step out of the darkness, and into the spotlight.
After I spy on my husband and his date, from behind a tree in the park. Again. The sight of him carrying her across the threshold of their new home flashes through my mind, as do the words CLOSED ESCROW!!! ![]()
Oh, here they are, popping onto my phone through the app:
David: You are the love of my life. Only two more days and I’m free.
Kylie: Can’t wait!! You’re the best!!! See you at dinner!!! xo
How dare he? I am the love of his life. The mother of his child.
Focus, Jane.
Yes, I’ll head back to Hollywood, soon.
First, I need to talk some things out with my loved ones. I find a parking spot easily, which is surprising this time of year, this close to the beach. The restaurant is a short block away, a short stroll through the oceanfront park. I hide my blond hair under a trucker hat and have extra-large sunglasses covering half of my face. I stick to the sidewalk, but most visitors are drawn to the oceanfront path. I myself am drawn to something else.
One last, in-person glimpse of David and Kylie together will seal their fate. It will be the final confirmation that they deserve everything that’s coming their way. Yes, I’ve finally accepted she has won for the moment, but like a moth to the flame I can’t resist one more piece of evidence. I reach the restaurant and take the path between the restaurant and the sea. Huge glass windows provide diners with a commanding view of the coastline, especially gorgeous at sunset. The windows also provide a crystal clear view of the people enjoying dinner.
