Andie was biting Travis’s ear playfully when I interrupted them, holding my phone out to her. ‘Andie, look.’ She regretfully pulled away and squinted at the screen while I rambled on. ‘This article says the girls were taken from their homes at night while they slept. The police confirmed there were signs of a break-in found at Zoey and Addie’s apartment. It matches similar evidence of break-ins found in the more recent victims’ homes. The screen over a window had been cut and the lock broken. There were scratch marks on the metal window trim on the outside. You really think my uncle could be capable of something like that?’
Suddenly, a chill ran up my spine as I thought about our own apartment, its back window lock never quite latching from the way the old building had shifted over the years. I’d been a bit nervous when we’d decided to take a first floor apartment but we’d been so excited about the large space with the low price tag, we just thought we were lucky to find it. But now I couldn’t help but see the similarities between the TSK cases and us. Two women, around my and Andie’s ages, roommates, stolen away in the middle of the night, never to be seen alive again. Was it already too late for Addie and Zoey? A bead of sweat formed along my hairline and I hastily wiped it away with the back of my hand.
Andie’s face scrunched into a frown. ‘Liz, you see how scary this is, right? He’s not dormant. He’s still actively hurting women and you’re purposefully putting yourself into his path. Hell, you’re putting both of us in his path. We kinda seem like his type.’
I swallowed hard, a small piece of guilt nudging at me that I was also putting Andie at risk by continuing my quest for information. Clicking the button on the side of my phone to put the screen to sleep, I stared at the green felt on the table while Travis took his turn. Is she right? Maybe this was too dangerous. But as I thought about Rosie and Cris, I knew I couldn’t let this newfound family go unless I had concrete proof of his guilt.
‘I have to go to Connecticut anyway for that exhibit I’m covering tomorrow and I already told them that I’d visit. I just can’t shake this fear that if the FBI couldn’t solve it after forty-five years, this could go on forever without me ever knowing the truth. I can’t just freeze Cris and Rosie out indefinitely. He just doesn’t seem violent to me but I promise, I’ll be careful. I’m going during daylight and Rosie will be there.’
