Suddenly, I heard a car engine outside and my blood ran cold. I rushed to the kitchen window and looked out. Cris was getting out of a bright green Camaro that he’d parked next to Travis’s car. He stopped and stared at Travis’s car for a second and then glanced at the cabin. I quickly crouched down. Looking around frantically, I ran back to the newly discovered door. I flipped the keychain around and tried another key that hadn’t worked on the front door. It fit and the knob turned smoothly. I rushed into the dark room and snapped the door shut behind me, stashing the keys in my pocket. My eyes hadn’t adjusted from the light of the kitchen and I could only just make out a small window near the ceiling. My heart thumped in my ears and I jumped when I heard Cris enter the cabin.

‘Liz?’ he called out and I clamped my hand over my mouth so I didn’t scream.

I listened as he walked around the cabin from room to room. I pulled the pepper spray from my pocket, turned the safety latch to the off position and stood behind the door, ready to pounce. With my free hand, I searched my pocket for my phone to call 911, trying not to make a sound as my fingers brushed against the keys. It wasn’t there. Shit! It’s still in the car hooked up to the charger.

‘Liz, are you here?’ came Cris’s voice again, fading as he walked away from the room I was hiding in.

In the quiet, I suddenly heard something in the room with me. Breathing, heavy breathing, and then a whisper. ‘Did he take you too?’

VICTIMS 24 & 25

Addie Wilson & Zoey Davis

CHAPTER 28

Addie licked the inside of the granola bar wrapper again, desperately searching for any crumb that might be hiding in the crevices. She dropped the wrapper on the ground with the rest of them. Zoey watched her with vacant eyes.

‘Get anything?’ Zoey asked.

‘I don’t think so.’
