Carly raised her arms in the air. “Yes! I knew it. How was it? Who was it with? Was it Jill? Oh, it has to be Jill. Tell me everything.”
Reagan laughed. “Again, you’re gonna need to calm down. Let the caffeine kick in first.”
“Why? Because you were up all night doing the nasty?”
“You’re such a dork. And I love you. But to answer your question, you’re damn right I was.”
Carly sat back with a groan. “God, you’re lucky. It’s been so long for me.” She looked down with a frown before shaking her head and sitting straight again. “Never mind that. Details. I need details.”
“First, yes, it was Jill. Who else would it be?”
“I don’t know.” Carly shrugged. “You’ve texted me about her, but you’ve never said you were exclusive or anything. You could have gone to a bar and hooked up with someone, for all I know.”
“And when have I ever done that?”
Carly blinked at her. “First two years of college. Like every weekend. Remember?”
“Okay, hold up. That’s a bit of an exaggeration. I only slept with three people during that time. The rest were just harmless make-out sessions. Besides, that was a long time ago. When in recent memory have I acted like that?”
“Fine. Never. So, wait, are you guys exclusive?”
Reagan sipped her coffee. “No. At least we haven’t talked about it. We’ve only been on one actual date. It’s not time yet for that chat. Plus, I’ve told you about her. I think any relationship talk will have to come slowly.”
“So, slow to talk. Physical, not so much. Am I getting that right?”
“Basically.”
“And…” Carly gestured with her hand, dragging the word out. “How was it?”
Reagan sat back and sighed. “Absolutely breathtaking.”
“Wow,” Carly whispered.
“Yeah. It just all felt…right. Ya know?”
“I do. But what about everything you told me before? How she can be cold.”
“She seems different with me,” Reagan replied with a shrug. “I think being cold just keeps people from getting close. I don’t think she trusts too easily or has a lot of faith in other people. But I’ve gotten peeks at her humor and passion and pain. She intrigues me. Plus,” she stopped to clear her throat as she played with a sugar packet, “I had, um, a small breakdown after our first date. I couldn’t have asked for a better response. She protected me, comforted me. She helped me.”
Carly grabbed her hand and squeezed. “Oh no. What happened?”
“I’m okay. Heard ‘Lean on Me’ in the Uber on the way to her place. Crying ensued. Anyway, she could have just sent me on my way as soon as we got back, but she didn’t. The next morning I kinda tried to end things, but she wants to stick around.”
