“Dinner tomorrow?” Reagan asked. Her eyes widened before Jill could answer, and she continued, “Shit. Is that too soon?”
Jill chuckled. Usually she would decline in an instant, but that thought never crossed her mind. “Definitely not too soon. I’m in.”
Reagan exhaled and lightly kissed her. “I’ll call you tonight.” Then with a smile and a wave, she walked out the front door.
Alone, Jill sighed. She expected to feel a powerful urge to end things and move on. Like she normally would. But last night confirmed what she’d known since the night in the bar. Reagan was intoxicating and grounding, and she wanted more of her—a new feeling she wanted to explore, and if that meant exploring more of Reagan then she was looking forward to it. A lot.
As Reagan started her car, she texted Carly that she’d be late. She received a reply of “No worries,” which was the same reply she would have received even if she was two hours late, instead of her current ten minutes because that’s just who Carly was.
When she rushed through the door, she spotted Carly at a booth in the back corner, a mug in front of her, so Reagan stopped at the counter and placed her order.
Sliding into the booth, she said, “I’m so sorry I’m late.”
“It’s okay. I’ve been reading,” she replied, pointing to the book she’d moved to the side.
“Not surprised by that. How’s everything with you?”
Carly stared at her with narrowed eyes, as if she was sizing Reagan up.
“What? Do I have something on my face? My clothes?” She touched her face and looked down at her shirt. Sure, it was the same one she wore yesterday, but Carly wouldn’t know that. And she didn’t think she had spilled anything on it.
“You look different.”
“Different how?” At that moment, a waiter placed Reagan’s coffee in front of her. “Thank you,” she told him, only to notice that his eyes were on Carly and she was blushing. When he walked away, she asked, “What was that?”
“Nope. Uh-uh. Don’t change the subject.”
Reagan held up her hands. “Whoa. Wouldn’t dream of it.”
“Good.” Carly folded her hands and leaned in. “Now. What’s different? You look…Did you have sex?” she squeaked as she pointed a finger.
Reagan reached across the table and pushed her hand down, looking around to see if anyone was paying attention to them. “Why you gotta be so loud about it?”
“Did you have sex?” Carly whispered.
Taking a sip of her coffee, Reagan delayed her answer. It was fun seeing Carly so worked up. She put the mug on the table and licked her lips. “I may have.”
