- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- What’s next onyour reading list?
Unless, of course, they’re the one who killed her.
Curtis clears his throat. “Look, we don’t even know for sure that my sister’s dead.”
Dale mutters something.
Curtis jumps up. “What did you say?”
Oh shit. Here we go again.
“Let’s call it a night,” I say as Curtis pads around the table toward Dale. “It’s late and we’re all on edge. We’ll talk about this more in the morning.”
Brent cuts Curtis off. “Time to hit the dorms, bro.”
Curtis eyes Dale, then turns on his heel, snatches up his bags, and storms out of the restaurant. Something about the slant of his shoulders gets to me. He looks broken all over again. I glance at Brent, nervous about leaving him in here with Dale, then chase after Curtis, grabbing my bags on the way.
“How many dorm rooms were unlocked?” I say as Curtis pushes through another set of double doors.
“Can’t remember.”
I brace for the lights to go off, but he bashes every switch he passes and they remain on.
“I don’t want to have to share with Heather,” I say.
I count the dorm doors as he smashes them open. “One, two.” The laundry cupboard. “Three, four. Cool. Heather and Dale can share.”
Curtis props the last door open with his foot. “Want this one?”
“Thanks.” I drag my board bag inside.
He remains in the doorway. There’s an angry red mark on his temple. “You need some ice on that,” I say.
Curtis tuts and inspects his knuckles. They’re red.
“Have you hurt your hand as well?” I say.
“It’s fine.” He tilts his head back against the door.
“You okay?”
“Yep.”
I watch him take deep breaths.
“Is it me or has Dale changed?” he says.
“He does seem pretty wound up.” Just like you, I could add, but I don’t. I change the subject. “So where are you based these days?”
“London, but I travel a lot. You?”
“Still Sheffield.”
He straightens. “Night, Milla. I’ll be next door. Just like old times.”
I feel a pang of something. Not regret, exactly, but a sense of what might have been.
I chase him into the corridor. This is not the best time to ask him, but I have to know. “Are you seeing anyone?”
I try to make it sound casual, but to my ear, it sounds anything but. Does he pick up on it? He turns slowly and I study his face, yet those blue eyes are as unreadable as ever. I think that’s one of the things that drew me to him, combined with the barrier he put up after Brent and I got together. He fascinated me. Still does.
“I broke up with someone a few months ago. Silvi Asplund?” He says it like I should recognize the name.
“I don’t follow the rankings anymore.”
