- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- What’s next onyour reading list?
Jesus, it freaks me out to see her with that hair. It was light brown back then but now it’s blond. The exact white-blond that Saskia’s used to be, only it doesn’t suit Odette’s sallow skin. It just looks odd.
“But your injury,” I say weakly. The only clear thought in my suddenly whirling mind. “They said you’d never walk.”
I glance at Brent and Curtis to see if they’re as stunned as I am.
“Doctors give you the worst-case scenario,” Brent says. “And they don’t always know. Necks and backs are funny.”
The rifle swings his way, cutting him off. “A year in a hospital bed until I could use my arms.” Little drops of spittle fly from Odette’s mouth. “Two years with the leg braces. Five years more of rehabilitation. Nothing funny about that.”
Brent backs into the corner. Curtis and I are still on the floor.
Suddenly I’m doubting Curtis again. “I thought Curtis FaceTimed you recently?” I say. “He didn’t seem to know about your recovery.”
“Pfft. What did he see? A harness. A headset. A chair. Easy.”
Like Brent, I’m flinching away from the gun, but Curtis doesn’t move. He’s in a dark place right now.
Odette wears a white camo jacket and matching trousers. Was she out there on the glacier earlier watching us? We’d never have seen her.
“Everything this weekend. All of this was you? But how?” I say.
She waves her fingers. “My brothers work the lifts here now, so it was simple. They would do anything for me. We are the only ones who know you are here.”
The liftie at the foot of the cable car. That’s why he looked familiar. I only met her brothers briefly at the hospital. Her other brother must have been running the bubble lift. I didn’t even notice him.
“But why, Odette? We were friends that winter, all of us. Why would you do this?” My mind is still spinning.
She gestures to Curtis and Brent. “Because you killed her! I guessed it was one of you. I did not guess it was three of you.” She inclines her head in the direction of the glacier. “Then he robbed her!”
Keeping the rifle trained on us, she slips her hand in her pocket and brings out a phone. “I heard everything. I recorded it.”
She stabs buttons and I hear Brent’s voice.
I didn’t mean to hurt her. Well, I did . . .
She stabs it again and it stops. “Every room is bugged. There are sound detectors that start recording when they hear a noise.”
She’s wearing Saskia’s perfume and violet eyeliner as though she’s tried to morph herself into her dead girlfriend. Which is seriously creepy. There’s even something Saskia-like about that look in her eyes. Or is it just hate that I see?
