- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- What’s next onyour reading list?
She doesn’t argue. Brent shuts the door behind her and jogs back down the corridor toward me. “She’s lost the plot,” he says. “Did you hear her?”
Curtis runs toward us.
“It’s okay,” I call.
He reaches us, breathless, and I fill him in.
“She thinks I’ve done something to Dale,” Brent says. “What do I do? It’s not safe for her out there.”
I look pointedly at Curtis. Brent’s on our side; we have to tell him about the traps.
Curtis hesitates. “Dale’s dead.”
Brent stares. “What? How?”
“Crevasse.” Curtis searches Brent’s face, clearly still not sure about him.
“Shit,” Brent says.
I check the corridor to make sure Heather’s still out there. “Any luck with the computers?”
Worry clouds Brent’s face. “No, but there’s something you need to see.” He throws another look at the main entrance, like he’s not sure what to deal with first, then leads us into the control room.
He points to the screens. I suck in my breath. You’d expect the majority of the screens to show the views from the mountain webcams, but only a couple show the slopes. The rest show the rooms in here. The function room, the kitchen. And the dorms.
I stare at the rumpled sheets on Curtis’s bed with a sick feeling in my stomach. “That’s your room.”
“I know,” Curtis says, his expression black.
Would they have seen us . . . ? The lights were out, but would the cameras have some night vision? I push the thought aside. “Who’s doing this?”
“Beats me,” Brent says.
I remember guiltily that he still doesn’t know Curtis is the one who invited us.
“Is there anyone else it could be apart from my sister?” Curtis says, his tone weary.
“I reckon Julien is behind this,” Brent says.
I consider that for a second. But I’m still not convinced. The last time I saw Julien with Saskia, he was furious at being rebuffed by her, and I can’t see what would cause such a sudden turnaround. Curtis opens his mouth.
I notice blood on Brent’s wrist. “Shit,” I say. “You’re bleeding.”
Heather’s wild movements must have accidentally nicked him.
Brent glances at it. And topples sideways.
Curtis catches him just in time. “Faints when he sees blood. Doesn’t go out for long.” Curtis heaves him into a chair. “Come on. Wake up.”
Curtis’s face changes. I realize where he’s looking. There’s Heather on one of the screens. Heading straight for the crevasse.
I bolt for the door. Pain flares through my knee.
“Wait!” Curtis says sharply.
Something moves in the bottom left corner of the screen. Another figure, in pale clothing that nearly blends into the snow. I stand there frozen.
“Who the fuck is that?” Curtis says.
Brent is coming around. He raises his head.
