- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- What’s next onyour reading list?
He closes his eyes briefly. “I don’t suppose Saskia showed up at the hospital?”
“No.”
Curtis swears. “I think something’s happened to her.”
“Have you tried her phone?”
It’s a long shot, because like me, Saskia rarely takes her phone up the mountain.
“No answer,” Curtis says.
“So she didn’t show at the Brits after I left?”
“No.”
Guilt rushes over me. This morning I wanted to hurt her. I hope you break your neck. And now it looks possible that I did hurt her. I shouldn’t have done it.
Curtis is looking at me curiously. “What? Do you know where she is?”
“No.”
“When did you last see her?”
My cheeks heat some more. “Early this morning. She stayed at my place last night.”
“Yeah?”
I can see his surprise. “We were the last ones to leave Glow Bar.” I choose my words carefully because I don’t want to have to lie. “We were getting on pretty well for once, so we walked up the street together. Julien was outside her place. He’d written something on her mailbox.”
Curtis’s face darkens. “That was him?”
“Yeah. Anyway, I invited her to my place and she ended up sleeping over. She left about eight.”
“If Julien’s done something to her—” Curtis swears and reaches for his jacket. “I’m going to pay him a visit.”
I catch his arm. “Not a good idea.” I can see how mad he is.
His eyes narrow.
“Seriously,” I say. “You’ll be done for assault. Call the police.”
“Fine.” He shakes his arm free and pulls out his phone.
I wait on the sofa. He’s speaking French, so I can’t tell what he’s saying but it sounds like he’s arguing.
He swears and hangs up. “They told me to wait two days.”
“Have none of the others seen her?” I say.
“Every time I call Dale or Heather, Dale rants down the line at me about how she’s screwed his and Heather’s lives and hangs up. And Brent’s being weird.”
“Yeah, why didn’t he show at the Brits?”
“Said he’d rolled his ankle.”
Curtis looks dubious and so am I. So far this season Brent’s had a concussion, shin splints, and a whole load of other injuries and it’s never stopped him from riding. Besides, he was walking just fine when I saw him a few minutes ago.
So what could have kept him from competing?
All our months of training and I never foresaw this outcome. That Odette would be the only one of our group to manage even part of a run in the final—and look how that ended up.
Curtis is pacing the room.
“Have you called the Mountain Rescue?” I say.
