  74. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  75. What’s next onyour reading list?

Saskia’s eyes sparkle. “What about you? Are you good, Milla?”

Nerves bubble inside me. We’re playing a game of one-upmanship, just like we do on the mountain.

I raise my eyebrow, feigning nonchalance. “What do you think?”

She reaches across to touch my hair. Studying me intently for a sign that she’s fazing me—or daring me to take the game further, I can’t tell.

“Seriously,” she says. “Because my brother would love to know.”

There’s envy in her tone, as though her brother’s desire is the one thing she can’t compete with me for, but the reference to Curtis jolts me. Next she’ll start asking how I feel about him. I need to shut this game down fast before I give anything away. One last killer move to knock her out of the ballpark.

I cup my hand to her jaw. “Maybe I am.”

I expect her to pull away but she doesn’t.

“Show me,” she whispers.

Okay. She’s fazed me.

But I can’t let her see that. There’s only one logical next move that I can think of. I lean in and kiss her. I feel her surprise in the form of a tiny jerk, then she kisses me back.

And I’m plummeting through the air with nothing beneath my feet. It’s the same stomach-dropping feeling I get when I overshoot a jump. I thought she would pull away. Instead she’s taken the game to a whole new level.

I’ve never kissed a girl before. Not on the mouth like this. Her lips are so much softer than Brent’s, and she kisses differently, too. But she’s with Odette. She’ll have to pull out before I do.

Then again, when have I ever known her to pull out of anything?

Through my lashes I see those intense blue eyes, so like her brother’s, studying me. I push her back to the bed and kiss her harder. She unzips my snowboard jacket, so I unzip hers and pull her sweater over her head.

Laughing, she strips me down to my bra. “Go on, then.” She indicates the zip of her corset.

My hand shakes as I open it. Her slim fingers slide across my bare stomach. She knows exactly where and how to touch me, and to my shock, I seem to know how to touch her—she’s responding at least. What about Odette? I feel guilty, but it’ll take more than that to stop me now.

I tell myself I’m doing this to win the competition—the private one she and I are locked in right now and the public one tomorrow. I tell myself it’s because the eyes gazing up at me could be Curtis’s.
