- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- What’s next onyour reading list?
“Yeah, not too good. She’ll fly home when she’s fit to fly. It was a bad break.”
“That’s awful. What about your shoulder?”
“I got it checked out while I was there.” Wry smile. “Handy, that.”
“And how is it?”
“Not that bad.”
Which basically means it’s hurting like hell but not enough to stop him from riding.
I nod in Brent’s direction. “Can I ask something? Why did you do that?”
“Do what?” Curtis says.
“Help Brent.”
Silence.
“The boy’s got balls,” Curtis says finally.
“Yeah, but you’re competing against him.”
He shrugs. “I guess it’s how I play this game.”
“Does Brent help you?”
“We discuss tricks, yeah.”
“You play the game a lot differently from how your sister plays it.” And from how I play it, I think, but don’t say.
Curtis’s jaw tightens. “I like to think so.”
My goggles have misted up again. Gripping the T-bar between my thighs, I pull my glove off and search my pocket for my goggle cloth. “Do you have a goggle cloth?”
“Here.”
Someone has dropped their sunglasses in the middle of the tow track. One-footed and no-handed, I steer around them. My board skids out from under me.
Curtis grabs me by the waist. “I’ve got you.”
Damn. As much as I try to pretend my crush has gone away, it hasn’t. It’s stronger than ever. “Thanks.”
It was a mistake to get on the lift with him. I need to focus. We’re nearly at the top. I take slow, deep breaths, trying to clear my mind.
“You okay?” Curtis says.
I smile. “Yeah. I’m trying to go bigger than your sister.”
“I noticed.” He’s not smiling.
“Let me guess. You’re going to tell me to cool it as well?”
“Who told you to cool it?”
“Brent.”
“No. Go for it. Just . . . watch your back around my sister, okay?”
I stare at him. “What do you mean by that?”
He presses his lips together as though he regrets saying anything.
I wish he’d tell me what’s going on. I think of his previous warnings to me. How he told Brent to keep an eye on her. Does Saskia have a history of more than just obnoxious pranks? Has she hurt someone else?
Right, that’s it. I’m going to confront her.
She’s strapping in at the top of the pipe, so I head over to her. “Can we talk?”
She seems surprised. “Sure.”
We’ve hardly spoken since she kicked my board into that crevasse. Curtis glances our way as he straps in. I look around for somewhere we can go where we won’t be overheard.
“Want to ride down to the chairlift?” she says.
“Yeah, great,” I say.
“Where are you going?” Curtis calls when we ride off in the opposite direction.
“The chair!” I shout.
