- About the Author
“If there’s something you want, you have to take a chance.” John shrugged. Of course, he had taken that chance before he knew of her ex-husband and the well-heeled and rarified circle of friends and acquaintances she must’ve been accustomed to. But that Anna—Tom Melton’s first wife Anna—didn’t reconcile with his Anna. She washed dishes in the back kitchen of a bar or asked the PA questions about her student film.
John didn’t know who she was before, but he wasn’t sorry to know her now.

JOHN’S COMMENT LINGERED, as if suspended in the air between them. Anna didn’t disagree with anything he said, but she also couldn’t think of a response. John didn’t look at her as if her IMDb credits or lack thereof followed her around in a thought bubble like a cartoon character. John looked at her like the last ten years hadn’t worn her down. How had she let it? How could she explain to him that his straightforwardness was the thing she liked most about him? He said what he thought and thought what he said. He didn’t dissemble or lie to get an advantage. That was why she found her armor wearing away the more time she spent with him.
Before she could find the right words to explain what their working relationship or tentative friendship or whatever it was meant to her, a knock sounded at the door. Reed stepped inside, dressed in his costume for the scenes on the schedule today. He wore dark pants and a high-collared floor-length leather jacket that had to be stifling.
“Apologies, Anna, I thought I would find you alone.” He looked between the two of them, and even though her and John’s conversation was hardly something to make her blush, she felt as if Reed had walked in on them doing something scandalous. “Can we talk?”
Anna nodded, reminding herself to be civil. Reed had been easy to work with since they’d arrived in Rome. She stood and walked to the door, leaving John to his call with LA.
“What do you want, Reed?” Anna closed the door behind the two of them.
Reed gave her a contemplative look. “Has Tom made things difficult for you since the divorce?”
