- About the Author
She wasn’t an expert, but she could get by. It was an unusual skill for a director these days, but Anna’s education had been haphazard.
“My early films.” Anna didn’t have time to swap credits with this guy. “You received the new script yesterday. Have you spoken to the electricians about the changes?”
“I haven’t had a chance to read it yet.” Cole frowned.
“You need to make time, and I need you to get the heads of the departments and principal cast together for a table read in an hour. Where’s the assistant director? George something?” Anna didn’t recognize the name, but the success of this shoot would depend on the AD. There were only so many hours in the day, and the less she dealt with administrative tasks, the more time she could spend with the actors and the heads of departments.
“He left too.” Cole scowled. “All my friends were fired.”
Anna thought longingly of the sleep she was going to miss while she was in Rome. The next time she talked to Dan, she would need to ask about the replacement. She should have asked before leaving LA, but it had been a long day, and she’d been more worried about the sets. Turned out she was right to be concerned.
“Is there a script girl?”
Cole shook his head. “I’m guessing she left with Bobby.”
Anna turned to her friend. “Can you get the new scripts in front of everyone?”
Jenny nodded. “I don’t have much to do now that the rewrites are done.”
Anna wouldn’t demand a rewrite like most new directors would have. Anna trusted Jenny’s work more than her own tinkering. She finalized the details on the table read with Cole and the electrician. The two men left without another word.
Pulling a team together always took a while, and this one was going to take more time, given the turnover. It would be even more challenging since the production had been a hot mess thus far. Restoring morale was always harder after it had been lost. Anna expected an uphill battle to earn the cast’s and crew’s trust while putting out the already-burning brush fires. It would be a headache, but Anna relished the challenge. She was so glad to be on set again that she would gladly deal with a cranky crew. She knew how to do her job. They would see that. Eventually.
Anna glanced over at her friend. There was another problem she and Jenny hadn’t discussed yet. “Are you going to be all right?”
Jenny studied the ground as if it were her laptop and she was a week behind on a script-doctoring job.
