“I saw D and Miguel making out before practice this morning, and then Ross came to bring me a cup of coffee, and Dominic was staring at us like he was super jealous, so I told him Ross is my new partner. But I made it up. There is no new relationship.”
Kavya’s mouth shifts into a satisfied smirk. “Serves him right. He needs to know people can forget him just as quickly as he ditches everyone else. But wait, does Ross know?”
The bit of pride I feel at making Dominic jealous suddenly shifts to Bubble Guts, the rolling nerves in my stomach whenever I’m guilty of something. But Ross said they wanted to help me get Dominic back, so they probably won’t be too mad if they’re the source of D’s jealousy, right?
“They don’t, do they?” Kavya can always read my mind.
I shake my head.
“What if they don’t want to be your partner?” she asks. “Maybe they have dating plans of their own.”
“God, you’re right. I really am a bag of dicks.” I shouldn’t have thrown Ross into something without asking permission first. It’s manipulative and gross.
I grab my AP World History book and slam my locker shut. The move is so violent that I drop my book, which falls open to a string of photo-booth shots of me and Dominic. My eyes pan down each pose: him kissing the back of my hand, running his fingers through the chest hair popping out of my V-neck, licking my cheek.
I look over at Dominic, who’s now doing practically the same things to Miguel. He tickles a blade of grass against Miguel’s neck, and I want to punch something and cry at the same time.
Kavya throws her arm around my waist and pulls me in for a rib-cracking hug.
“You’re going to break something,” I wheeze.
“No, I’m not,” she says. “I’m trying to squeeze out the last bit of love you have for Dominic. Or at the very least, associate pain with any tender looks you give him.”
But I don’t want that. One squeeze and bam! All memories of Dominic, gone.
I bend down and tuck the strip of pictures behind the fold of my history book cover.
“Why aren’t you ripping that up?” Kavya asks. “We don’t need reminders of D-Bag springing up on you anymore.”
I think back to Dominic looking like he wanted to help after my crash in the quad. I know he still cares about me. He wouldn’t end things this quickly unless something was seriously wrong. I just need to find out what’s got him so off and remind him of what he lost.
